WWE NXT Results: Winners, Live Grades, Reaction and Highlights From June 4
The June 4 edition of WWE NXT promised the final build to Battleground with major aftermath from last week's eventful episode.
TNA Knockouts world champion Jordynne Grace made her NXT in-ring debut, fighting Stevie Turner as a warmup for her NXT Women's Championship challenge against Roxanne Perez.
Trick Williams was certain to respond to the brutal attack from "All Ego" Ethan Page while also hoping to avoid more antics from Noam Dar and Meta-Four.
Tony D'Angelo defended the Heritage Cup against No Quarter Catch Crew's Damon Kemp.
Sol Ruca, Fallon Henley, Michin, Kelani Jordan, Lash Legend and Jaida Parker would meet in a summit just days before the Women's North American Championship ladder match.
Thea Hail looked for revenge against Jazmyn Nyx, who continued to haunt her for injuring Jacy Jayne.
The show would feature a special look at Shayna Baszler vs. Lola Vice in NXT Underground as well as footage from a brutal brawl between Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson, Nathan Frazer and Axiom ahead of their tag title match.
This was an important show for the gold brand that fans would not want to miss on the road to Battleground at the UFC Apex on Sunday.
Jordynne Grace vs. Stevie Turner
1 of 10Stevie Turner tried to make a statement at the expense of Jordynne Grace, but the TNA Knockouts world champion was too powerful.
The Juggernaut Driver ended it clean.
Roxanne Perez got in the face of Grace afterward but got knocked down effortlessly before The Prodigy ducked out.
This was a quick and effective squash that was much better balanced than typical NXT squashes but still not much to write home about.
Those who do not know Grace well saw how much power she has. Turner tested her just enough to come off as a competitor before it was made clear that she was no true match.
It's a shame NXT could not get any TNA footage to highlight the champion, though the biggest showcase is still to come at Battleground in a match that should likely be the main event.
Result
Grace def. Turner by pinfall.
Grade
C+
Notable Moments
- The show started with Ethan Page arriving to meet Ava, Mr. Stone and several security guards to talk contract status.
- The Prodigy interrupted Turner's entrance before joining commentary.
- Grace effortlessly lifted Turner off the mat with only her shoulders.
- Turner asked Ava for another opportunity backstage, but the general manager was still too preoccupied with the All Ego drama.
Women's North American Title Ladder Match Summit
2 of 10Booker T tried to host the Women's North American title ladder match summit, but the combatants quickly took over.
Jaida Parker and Fallon Henley interrupted Michin. Kelani Jordan then explained why she "needed" this.
Sol Ruca tried to take over the conversation, but Lash Legend shut her down. Fighting soon broke out that led to Mr. Stone announcing a six-woman tag match for later in the night.
This did little for anyone involved. Jordan cut the most memorable promo, and even that would have been better delivered on her own without heckling from her Battleground opponents.
None of the women established anything more about themselves or their characters. The six-woman tag match on its own would have been enough to keep building the ladder match hype.
Grade
D
Notable Moments
- In the parking lot, Lash Legend broke up with Trick Williams to focus on her title aspirations.
- Later, Jordynne Grace spoke with Michin as well as meeting Sol Ruca, Arianna Grace and Tatum Paxley for the first time.
- NXT showed footage for Shayna Baszler and Lola Vice ahead of their Battleground match including comments from multiple UFC legends, predicting the result.
Thea Hail (w/ Andre Chase and Ridge Holland) vs. Jazmyn Nyx
3 of 10Thea Hail was rolling until Duke Hudson and Riley Osborne arrived late (despite saying they would not be at ringside).
Jazmyn Nyx grabbed the referee to save her from a Kimura Lock and then connected with a pele kick for the victory.
This was less than the sum of its parts. While the Chase U storylines have weight and some heat, Nyx did not look ready to work a complete match with Hail, leading to a rushed finish with abbreviated drama at ringside.
While NXT is starting to get behind Nyx, she should not be defeating a contender like Hail this early in her career, especially with such a minor distraction.
Hail's momentum after a memorable win over Jacy Jayne suffers, and this only made the Osborne vs. Ridge Holland conflict feel like a hindrance to the product.
Result
Nyx def. Hail by pinfall.
Grade
D
Notable Moments
- Hudson and Osborne told Hail that they would not support her at ringside because Holland was going to be out there.
- Nathan Frazer and Axiom brawled with Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows at the NXT merchandise trailer before the show started.
- Later, the NXT tag team champions warned The O.C. that they refused to lose at Battleground, even with lingering injuries from the brawl.
Shawn Spears Lays out Josh Briggs; Je'Von Evans Makes Him Pay
4 of 10Shawn Spears attacked Josh Briggs with a steel chair backstage.
Je'Von Evans stepped up to Spears and brawled with him into the ring.
The Young OG caught him with a back body drop off the announce table and then a springboard cutter in the ring.
NXT has not booked a new star as well as Evans in years. He is all over the product so far with a clearly established character that can fit into any spot.
The way he stepped up to Spears would have been a fun spot for someone with less spotlight already on them, but Evans made the most of it.
Spears had a rocky start to his new NXT run, but a battle for the young hearts and minds in NXT could be the perfect spot for him, especially with a fiery Evans standing up to him.
The victim in all this was Briggs, who is lost in the current booking climate. However, he could fit into this Spears angle (fighting against or for the man who beat him down) in a few different ways that could get him back on track.
Grade
B+
Notable Moments
- Earlier in the night, Spears preached to Uriah Connors, Evans and three more unnamed wrestlers until Briggs confronted him about his "teachings." The Young OG was clearly not interested.
Heritage Cup: Tony D'Angelo (c) vs. Damon Kemp
5 of 10Tony D'Angelo picked up the first fall with the Forget About It just one minute into round one. As the bell rang in round four, Damon Kemp ran into a spinebuster to seal the victory.
Stretches of this were good, but the commercial break cut into much of the action, leaving a shell of the match in full screen.
The Don had to win this in dominant fashion, but Kemp held his own and got some visual pin on D'Angelo, even if it did not count.
The Family vs. No Quarter Catch Crew is not working as a rivalry so far, hurt by the lack of credibility for the heel team. Charlie Dempsey has especially become a caricature of a tough guy and needs a firm reset.
Maybe it's fully time to bring in Williams Regal to manage this group.
Result
D'Angelo def. Kemp two falls to zero to retain the Heritage Cup.
Grade
C+
Notable Moments
- Dempsey awkwardly attempted his best mob boss impression in the Performance Center training room before trying to motivate Kemp.
- While both teams teased using the "Catch Clause", the announced men competed in this match.
- Kemp almost got a three count off a rolling fireman's carry, but time ran out in round three.
Natalya (w/ Karmen Petrovic) vs. Izzi Dame
6 of 10Karmen Petrovic came out with a walking stick due to an injury suffered over the weekend. Natalya took Petrovic's spot in the match.
Dame threw Natalya around with confidence but still got caught with a roll-up for three.
Hopefully, Petrovic's injury is only a temporary setback after finally starting to pick up momentum. She has shown more potential with time and cannot afford time away.
This was a solid showcase for Dame, who is one of the most exciting powerhouses to watch in NXT already. She and Natalya meshed well but needed much more time. The match ended before it got fully kicked into gear.
It was odd to see The Queen of Harts picking up a quicker win just one day after telling the world that she needed a change on Raw, but she has mostly separated her work in NXT from her story on Raw.
Result
Natalya def. Dame by pinfall.
Grade
C
Notable Moments
- Natalya gave her sunglasses to Booker T despite Vic Joseph telling her not to fuel his ego further.
- Natalya repeated her line from Raw after her win: "Enough is enough, and it's time for a change!"
Gallus Make Statement at Expense of Oba Femi and Wes Lee
7 of 10Joe Coffey, Mark Coffey and Wolfgang beat down Tyriek Igwe and Tyson Dupont ahead of an expected tag match and then promised to take the NXT North American Championship.
Oba Femi and Wes Lee confronted Gallus, but both men got beat down by the trio of heavy-hitters.
This was by far the best segment to build this Triple Threat match. This bout needed it as it feels the least consequential on the card for Battleground.
Gallus needed this opportunity to look dominant. This segment argued that Joe should be considered the favorite in this upcoming match. It is more likely Femi retains, but any booking that makes the result less predictable is welcome.
Grade
B
Notable Moments
- Gallus blamed Ava for costing the group their main event match after she banned Wolfgang from ringside last week.
- The group made clear that this will not be a traditional Triple Threat as both Mark and Wolfgang would do anything possible to make sure Joe wins.
- A vignette promised the return of Wendy Choo next week, though there seemed to be something wrong with her at the end of the video.
- Dante Chen attacked Lexis King during his interview. Security broke them up before King set a challenge to "settle this once and for all."
Lash Legend, Fallon Henley and Kelani Jordan vs. Sol Ruca, Michin and Jaida Parker
8 of 10The action completely broke down after some solid tag team work, and Sol Ruca took advantage with a Sol Snatcher on Lash Legend to win.
While the breakdown in the action was predictable, this match featured some great action, including showcasing the talent who are walking in less experienced.
Ruca took the win, solidifying her as the favorite to win the ladder match, though everyone showed out enough to make their case to capture the gold.
Legend taking the pin here might indicate she will rebound by capturing the title, especially since Trick Williams and Legend ending Battleground on top with gold would be an impressive sight.
Result
Ruca, Michin and Parker def. Legend, Henley and Jordan by pinfall.
Grade
B+
Notable Moments
- Parker was a major standout in this match, allowed to take on the heavy physical focus in this match despite being the least seasoned performer.
- "We want Sol" chants were loud in this match as Parker refused to tag in Ruca.
- Jacy Jayne came out with a face mask alongside Jazmyn Nyx to watch.
Ethan Page Signs NXT Contract and Gets an NXT Championship Match
9 of 10"All Ego" Ethan Page lived up to his name and demanded a better contract than anyone in NXT while promising to replace all the stars who were taken in the WWE draft.
Trick Williams arrived to tell Ava to make sure Page signs on the dotted line and set up an NXT Championship match. All Ego signed, as did Ava, reluctantly. The title match was made official.
This was not perfect, but it was a strong indication that Page is going to be one of the top guys in NXT. He played the crowd, built Trick up and sold his position as an upstart looking to jump-start his career.
The inexperience of Ava and Trick in these situations led to some awkward exchanges, but that is the charm of NXT. These two are learning with each big opportunity.
Trick vs. Page is an intriguing last-minute addition for Battleground because it is not clear how far NXT is willing to go to push All Ego.
Anyone else would lose to Trick this early in his title reign, but Page could just prove an impossible hurdle.
Grade
B+
Notable Moments
- Eddy Thorpe promised he was returning to action soon in a promo package right before the final segment.
- Page refused to sign his contract anywhere but in the ring. Trick told Ava he would see All Ego out there.
- The crowd heckled Page throughout this segment, and he responded in kind. The Trick chants go under his skin.
- Trick promised to make an example out of Page for trying to jump the line in NXT (like others who might consider coming in from other companies).
Overall Show
10 of 10Past an understated start with Jordynne Grace's dominant debut, this show struggled in its first hour only to pick up in a big way for the second.
The driving build to Battleground was on point. Roxanne Perez vs. Grace, Lola Vice vs. Shayna Baszler and the Women's North American Title ladder match feel big-time.
Oba Femi vs. Wes Lee vs. Joe Coffey got a major hype boost. Nathan Frazer and Axiom vs. Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson was aided by a fiery promo from the champions (even if it would have nice to see them live).
Finally, NXT went from a lackluster Trick Williams vs. Noam Dar build to a hot Trick vs. Ethan Page match that could genuinely change the course of the brand.
Last week was an important turning point for NXT, and this show kept that momentum. However, with Grace likely done after Battleground, the weaker builds will need a major jump-start after the premium live event.
Overall Grade: B
