49ers Rumors: Brandon Aiyuk Doesn't Report to Mandatory Minicamp Amid Contract Buzz

Scott PolacekJun 4, 2024

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk's contract situation has been a focal point all offseason, and his reported decision to skip Tuesday's mandatory minicamp only moves it further under the spotlight.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Aiyuk is subject to fines after he did not report to mandatory minicamp. Rapoport noted the pass-catcher wants a new contract with just one season remaining on the current one.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the situation while speaking with reporters:

"That stuff takes time and everything, but now, especially with guys in practices, minicamp stuff, I don't ask about it at all. Some guys come because they want to avoid a fine, and some don't."
"But regardless, it doesn't change anything when those guys have come. We know what the process is. We know what the business part is. That's just how they decide how they want to handle this week."

This comes after ESPN's Nick Wagoner reported last month that even though "a deal doesn't appear imminent … the 49ers remain confident something will get done to keep Aiyuk for the long haul."

Wagoner noted San Francisco has a habit of letting contract negotiations last well into the offseason and did so with players such as George Kittle, Fred Warner, Deebo Samuel and Nick Bosa.

However, there has been plenty of noise with the Aiyuk situation.

His agent, Ryan Williams, denied there was a trade request in April. Later that month, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported ahead of the draft that the 49ers at least discussed trading either Aiyuk or Samuel to move up.

Most notably, Aiyuk seemed to suggest "money talks, bulls--t walks" after general manager John Lynch said the front office was working toward an extension:

The wide receiver market received quite the shake up on Monday when the Minnesota Vikings and Justin Jefferson agreed to a massive new extension. NFL Network's Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported the four-year, $140 million deal made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league.

San Francisco was also busy Tuesday with Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reporting it agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $19 million per year with running back Christian McCaffrey.

What that means for Aiyuk remains to be seen, but McCaffrey is a game-changing playmaker and a major part of the team's offense. The 49ers doing what they could to keep him was anything but a surprise.

Aiyuk surely hopes he's next.
