Bears' Eberflus: Caleb Williams 'Suited' for 'Hard Knocks' Spotlight in Rookie Season

Andrew PetersMay 31, 2024

The Chicago Bears are the subject for this season of Hard Knocks, and head coach Matt Eberflus believes his new quarterback Caleb Williams will thrive with the cameras on him.

"I do, I really do," Eberflus said at a press conference Friday (h/t Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper). "That's a really good point. I do think he's suited for that. He's comfortable in his own skin, he knows who he is and he's been out there for several years in terms of in the media... he'll be good."

The show debuts August 6 and will follow the Bears throughout training camp and into the regular season.

Last season, HBO and NFL Films covered the New York Jets as they prepared for their first season with Aaron Rodgers. The show began in 2001, but this will be the first time it has followed the Bears, and it seems like an opportune time to spotlight Chicago given the hype surrounding Williams.

The No. 1 overall pick and 2022 Heisman Trophy winner joins the Bears looking to become the franchise quarterback they've been searching for for years. It's no secret Chicago has lacked a serious weapon under center—it's the only franchise in NFL history to never have a 4,000-yard passer—but Williams could finally be the answer.

Williams joins the professional ranks fresh off of two outstanding seasons at USC. He had 4,537 passing yards and 42 touchdowns in 2022 before collecting 3,633 yards and 30 touchdowns last season. His college numbers justify why Chicago used the top pick on him, now he's looking to prove himself in Year 1.

Luckily for Williams, the Bears have surrounded him with plenty of talent to help ease him into the NFL.

Wide receiver DJ Moore and tight end Cole Kmet are familiar faces for Chicago fans, but the Bears also traded for receiver Keenan Allen over the offseason and drafted Washington star receiver Rome Odunze to give Williams a few more weapons.

The Bears might not be competing for a Super Bowl in the first year of the Williams era, but if he pans out the way they hope, the future will be bright in Chicago.

Hard Knocks will look to document that promising future this season starting in August. Episodes will air on HBO and stream on Max.
