NBA Rumors: Trade Reports and Rumblings from Around the League
While the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks await the other in the upcoming 2024 NBA Finals, the rest of the Association has already entered the offseason.
The volume of activity on the rumor mill reflects as much.
Let's dig into the latest basketball buzz and dissect what it all means.
76ers Eyeing Paul George, Jimmy Butler
1 of 3
The Philadelphia 76ers enter this summer with a mountain of roster-reshaping tools at their disposal. Frankly, they have far more flexibility than you almost ever see from a team already possessing the potential high-end outcomes afforded to Philly by its superstar pairing of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
The Sixers nearly have blank-slate financial books, meaning they can splurge on a max-contract star and more before circling back to give Maxey his well-earned pay raise. They also have some draft picks to throw around on the trade market, in case free agency doesn't offer up the difference-maker they're after.
Speaking of which, they're already building a blueprint for finding said needle-mover. Paul George tops the wish list, but they see a Jimmy Butler trade "as a fallback option" if they can't get George, per Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, who added they are "prepared to give Butler a maximum-salary extension if things align and he forces a trade out of Miami."
It makes sense to prioritize George for a couple reasons. He's a better shooter and less ball-dominant than Butler, which should make him a cleaner complementary fit to the Embiid-Maxey combo. Plus, adding George in free agency wouldn't cost the Sixers anything other than cap space, while a Butler trade would require surrendering actual assets.
If George isn't possible, though, Butler's experience, tenacity, toughness and creation would all be welcome additions to this squad.
Jazz Are Open for Business
2 of 3
If you had to assign one word to describe each franchise's upcoming offseason, the Utah Jazz would be an easy one to knock out: Opportunistic.
Based on the latest buzz, this front office might be open to just about anything.
Could they load up and try making a run with Lauri Markkanen? That's one option, as HoopsHype's Michael Scotto relayed that the Jazz are expected to "shop both their two first-round picks—No. 10 and No. 29—for a win-now player."
What about shifting the focus a little more into the future, though? Well, it sounds like they'd consider that, too, as FanSided's Evan Sidery reported the Jazz "are expected to make Jordan Clarkson available on the trade market" and "could fetch additional draft capital from contenders in need of scoring punch."
Everything seems like it's on the table in Salt Lake City, as it should be. The Jazz have no obvious incentive to try rushing up the standings, but fortunes can change quickly with the right acquisition or two, so it's wise not to rule out a possible acceleration.
Spurs Searching for a Point Guard
3 of 3
It should feel hyperbolic to say this about a 20-year-old, sophomore-to-be, but it seems pretty obvious the San Antonio Spurs unearthed a generational talent with last year's top pick, Victor Wembanyama.
Now, they just need to upgrade their supporting cast around them.
More specifically, they "will look to upgrade at point guard this summer," per Scotto, and they'll have different ways of trying to do that.
Since they hold a pair of top-10 picks (Nos. 4 and 8), they could just try finding their next floor general with one of those. Or, they could try for a more instant-impact option on the trade market, though there was some cold water dumped on the fun-in-theory idea of pursuing a Trae Young trade. There are myriad more options available in trades or free agency, though, if San Antonio seeks out a proven producer at the position.
