Dak Prescott Rumors: Cowboys, QB Still Haven't Had 'Meaningful' Contract Negotiations
As Dallas Cowboys star quarterback Dak Prescott enters the final year of his contract, many expected that the franchise would make it a priority to sign him to an extension this offseason.
However, ESPN's Todd Archer reported on Wednesday that "there haven't been meaningful talks between the sides" regarding a long-term extension for Prescott.
Unlike other players who are seeking new deals this offseason, Prescott has been present for the start of Dallas' voluntary offseason workouts. He declared earlier this month, "I don't play for money," which allowed the Cowboys front office to breathe a sigh of relief.

Still, Archer noted that team owner Jerry Jones "knows the final price on an agreement will be significant, perhaps higher than the $55 million annually Joe Burrow makes as the league's highest-paid quarterback."
Archer also pointed out that Prescott has endured slow-moving contract negotiations in the past, and it worked out in his favor.
"While the Cowboys have been criticized for waiting to get a deal done, Prescott has shown patience," Archer stated. "It worked for the signal-caller in 2021, when he signed his four-year, $160 million deal, and it could work again."
Dallas has until the start of the 2025 league year to get a deal done with Prescott, but Archer added that signing him to an extension prior to the start of the 2024 campaign would be "preferable" for the Cowboys.
If Prescott hits free agency, he could end up with a new team while still counting for $40.5 million against the cap for Dallas next year, so the franchise is likely hoping to avoid that situation.
