French Open 2024 Results: Instant Reactions to Winners and Losers from Tuesday

Tyler ConwayMay 29, 2024

Tuesday's action at the 2024 French Open was a largely straightforward affair.

No major contenders were upset, and even the high seeds that got ousted did so against quality competition.

Novak Djokovic, looking to repeat as French Open champion for the first time, looked to be in fine form against Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Casper Ruud, Taylor Fritz and Holger Rune also advanced in relative ease in their first-round matchups on the men's side.

On the women's side, second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka, fourth-seeded Elena Rybakina and seventh-seeded Qinwen Zheng were all able to move on to Round 2.

Here is a look at how the entire day's action played out.

Djokovic isn't allowing himself to be impressed after a 6-4, 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over Herbert. The world No. 1 said he still has "low expectations but high hopes" for his performance at Roland Garros amid his struggles to finish off a tournament this year.

"Monte-Carlo, Rome and Geneva tournaments started really well for me. First matches I played were great. Then second matches, third matches were quite different. So I don't want to get too excited," Djokovic said.

"I thought it was a good performance for me, solid. Of course I could have done better, I think, on return games, but also credit to him for serving very well, for changing things up."

Herbert had only one break chance the entire match, as Djokovic was accurate and efficient with his service game. Djokovic won 37 return points in comparison to Herbert's 17.

The 37-year-old, who regained his world No. 1 status in September, has not even made so much as a tournament final in 2024. He will need to reach the finals at the French Open to avoid falling behind Jannik Skinner in the ATP rankings.

Djokovic's next test will come against Roberto Carballes Baena in the second round.

The three-set matches of the women's bracket sometimes lead to higher variance in the early rounds of majors, but that was not the case Tuesday.

Sabalenka, Rybakina and Zheng were all done with their matches in rapid fashion. None of the trio lost more than three games in a set, and they combined for just 11 game losses overall.

Sabalenka won five of her six break points in a 6-1, 6-2 dispatching of Erika Andreeva. The world No. 2 is looking to build on her 2023 semifinals appearance at Roland Garros and win her first major outside of Australia. She would be the first woman to win the Australian Open and French Open in the same year since Serena Williams in 2015.

"It was great match, great start for me," Sabalenka said. "I think I was focusing on myself the whole game. I think that's why I was able to bring such good tennis."

Rybakina, who has made it past the third round just once in her French Open career, looked ready for a deep run in her opening match. She pushed Greet Minnen to 10 break points in a 6-2, 6-3 triumph, overcoming her own occasional struggles with her serve to advance to the second round.

Zheng, who is coming off a finals loss to Sabalenka in Australia, appears on a mission to continue her rise in the rankings. Her 6-2, 6-1 victory over Alizé Cornet was jarring in how easily she dispatched of the veteran. The 21-year-old won on 81 percent of her first-serve points and pushed Cornet to 16 break points.
