NBA Draft Prospect Alex Sarr: Kevin Durant, Giannis Are Players I've Watched 'A Lot'
NBA draft prospect Alex Sarr has the size and skill of a modern big man, and as his NBA debut nears, he said that he's modeled his game off of players with a similar frame.
In an interview with The Athletic and Stadium's Shams Charania, Sarr said he grew up watching Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant and Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.
"Growing up, I used to watch a lot of Kevin Durant and Giannis," Sarr said. "Tall guys, they can do pretty much everything on the court and they don't really let themselves just be put in a box."
Like Durant and Antetokounmpo, Sarr has plenty of length at 7'1", and he's looking to use his size to his advantage the way the two former MVPs have in their careers.
Sarr, who plays for the Perth Wildcats of Australia's NBL, is widely regarded as a top-five pick across many mock drafts. Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman projects him to be the No. 2 overall pick, going to the Washington Wizards. Ben Couch of NBA.com noted that Sarr was the most popular pick to go No. 1 across a compilation of mock drafts.
Sarr was already popular among NBA scouts, but he helped his case after a strong showing at the NBA combine last week.
In 24 games in the NBL, Sarr has averaged 9.7 points three rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game. Going up against pros means that his transition to the NBA could be much more seamless than that of a collegiate player.
For now, Sarr will look to continue impressing scouts as the June 26 NBA draft nears.
