Drew Brees Suggests Steelers Could Use Justin Fields in Taysom Hill-Like Package
Former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has a solution for the Pittsburgh Steelers regarding their quarterback situation.
On the Dan Patrick Show on Friday, Brees suggested the Steelers take a page out of the Saints' book and use Justin Fields how New Orleans uses Taysom Hill while letting Russell Wilson be the starter.
"Justin Fields obviously has an incredible skill set and I'm excited to see how Pittsburgh uses him this year," Brees said (2:00 mark). "I would actually envision a situation where it's almost like a Taysom Hill-type package like we had in New Orleans. Russell Wilson is you're starting quarterback, Justin Fields is getting seven to 10 snaps a game. How problematic would that be for a defense?"

Brees pointed to Fields' playmaking ability as a reason why the Steelers should allow him to operate under center as a compliment to Wilson.
"He can come in and do many things explosively in the run game and the pass game. Why wouldn't they have started him off that way as a rookie," Brees said in reference to the Chicago Bears. "Hey, you're not going to be the starter, but we're going to have a package of stuff for you that brings you along to kind of get your feet wet and get you into this without feeling like you're throwing the whole thing on his shoulders."
While Fields is still finding his footing as a passer, he has been adept in the run game through his first three NFL seasons. In just 13 games in 2023, he picked up 657 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. His best rushing season came in 2022 when he collected 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns.
Hill, who has played for New Orleans since 2017, has never been the Saints' main quarterback option but comes in for a few snaps in most games to pick up some yards in creative ways. He has also served as a receiving option, notching 756 yards and 11 touchdowns through the air throughout his career.
The Steelers signed the veteran Wilson this offseason just weeks before trading for Fields. Bringing both quarterbacks to Pittsburgh was a somewhat surprising move at first, but putting them in the package that Brees suggested could pay dividends.
