Jets Insider: 'Premature to Say' Jordan Travis Is Aaron Rodgers' 'Heir Apparent'

Andrew PetersMay 16, 2024

The New York Jets have a new face in the quarterback room in former Florida State signal-caller Jordan Travis, a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

Travis likely won't see the field much—if at all—in 2024, but one Jets insider believes that is part of New York's plan for him. According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, Travis was picked as a long-term project rather than a locked-in quarterback of the future.

Cimini noted that while Travis has thought about being Rodgers' successor, it's too early to give him that title.

"Travis is not expected to play in 2024," Cimini wrote. "Everything about the decision to pick him was based on the long term. The Jets are hopeful that Travis will be back on the field for training camp, but the plan is to have him sit and learn from Aaron Rodgers and Tyrod Taylor. It's premature to say Travis is Rodgers' heir apparent, though he said he does 'think about that a lot.'"

Travis was a standout at Florida State, notching 2,756 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and just two interceptions during his final season with the Seminoles. Travis fractured his leg against North Alabama in November but is expected to be ready for training camp.

With Aaron Rodgers and Tyrod Taylor ahead of him on the roster, the 2024 season will be about learning for Travis, and the Jets are fine with him being a project rather than a complete product.

"The Jets see him as a developing quarterback with quick eyes, a compact delivery and the ability to play on schedule even though his strength is making off-platform plays," Cimini wrote. "Travis can learn at a relaxed pace, a luxury the Jets' previous young quarterbacks didn't have."

The Jets are coming off a disappointing 7-10 season which began with Rodgers' season-ending injury in the first game of the year. With Rodgers back on the field in 2024, New York is looking to reach the postseason for the first time since 2010.

While the Jets are in win-now mode with the 40-year-old Rodgers under center, Travis could be ready to be an NFL starter in the next few years.
