Boxing Announcer Dan Hennessey Retires After Naming Wrong Winner in Viral Video

Adam WellsMay 16, 2024

Boxing announcer Dan Hennessey is retiring following backlash to a mistake in the Nina Hughes-Cherneka Johnson bout that took place on the undercard of Vasiliy Lomachenko's fight with George Kambosos Jr.

In a post on Facebook, Hennessey said the "worldwide backlash" to his error is affecting his mental health and he intends to walk away after one more event:

"I love all the support from everyone. Thank you all for the kind words. Unfortunately the worldwide backlash is absolutely incredible and it's effecting my mental health to a degree where I will have 1 more show ever.. I am doing this show because I am still a man of my word and promised Sam Rapira that I would do it because he is a great mate and I refuse to leave him hanging. I love and will keep in touch with all my friends from around the world. Thank you.. No longer the world's punching bag. I'm out."

Hennessey initially declared Hughes as the winner before checking the scorecards and calling both fighters back into the ring to acknowledge his mistake because Johnson had actually won on the judges' scorecards.

Hennessey issued a public apology for his mistake on Facebook on Sunday, writing that he owns the mistake and "it's all on me."

Speaking to Sean Ingle of The Guardian on Tuesday about the incident, Hughes said she was "still angry" about the situation and her camp is working to secure a rematch with Johnson.

"I've not heard anything yet," Hughes said of a potential rematch. "It's all down to the WBA. I am just praying they do the right thing. But it has to be on neutral territory."

Hughes entered the bout with a 6-0 record and was making her second defense of the WBA bantamweight title.

Per CompuBox stats, Johnson landed more total punches (167 to 133) and had a higher percentage of successful strikes (32.1 to 23.3). Hughes had a significant edge in power punches (96 to 70).

Two of the three judges scored the bout in favor of Johnson, 98-92 and 96-94. The third judge scored it as a draw, giving Johnson the win by majority decision.

According to Boxing Scene, Hennessey joined the United States Marine Corps in 1991 before moving to New Zealand seven years later to become a club DJ.

Hennessey was hired by Sky TV in 2003 working primarily as a commentator for the New Zealand National Basketball League. His first high-profile job as a boxing announcer came in 2009 for David Tua's comeback against Shane Cameron.
