NFL Rumors: Steelers' Cam Heyward Eyes Contract Extension, Won't Attend OTAs

Scott PolacekMay 15, 2024

The Pittsburgh Steelers might not see much of defensive lineman Cameron Heyward in the immediate future.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Wednesday that Heyward, who is entering the final season of his contract, has not been present at voluntary offseason workouts and is also planning on sitting out OTAs because he wants a new deal.

It's certainly a change for Heyward considering Fowler noted the veteran has never missed an offseason program.

He has been with the Steelers his entire career since they selected him with a first-round pick in the 2011 NFL draft. The Ohio State product has been a staple in the middle of the defensive line for 13 seasons as a six-time Pro Bowler and three-time First-Team All-Pro selection.

Heyward also won the 2023 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award.

While Pittsburgh may be somewhat hesitant to give him a significant deal since he is 35 years old, he was a Pro Bowler as recently as the 2022 season when he posted double-digit sacks for a second straight campaign.

However, he played just 11 games this past season and had 33 tackles and two sacks, which was a far cry from his production in recent years.

Perhaps there is a middle ground to be reached considering how important Heyward has been throughout his career for the Steelers and how effective he was just one season ago. There are some concerns given his age and lack of production in 2023, but he figures to have an opportunity to bounce back in 2024.

Ideally from his perspective, that opportunity will come with a new contract.
