A'ja Wilson: I Have 'A Lot More to Do' to Be in WNBA GOAT Debate After 2 Aces Titles

Joseph ZuckerMay 14, 2024

Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson doesn't believe she has yet earned the right to enter the WNBA's GOAT debate.

"I would love to have my name mentioned in conversations when you're talking about the greatest women's basketball player ever to play," she said to Boardroom's Vinciane Ngomsi. "But in my eyes, I still have a lot more I have to do to even be in that conversation. I feel I'm only letting people see pieces as I'm getting throughout my career, and I'm like, just wait until I'm really trying to get there and work towards that.

"Right now, I'm having fun with it and love what I do, but I still feel like I have so much to give. I worked my butt off to get to that point, but I still feel like I have a long way to go to even think about it."

Wilson preferred to describe herself as a "GOAT-in-Training."

It's tough for any player who's still only 28 and midway through their career to lay claim to a GOAT distinction. In the case of Wilson, there's no disputing she's on that kind of trajectory with the volume of accolades she has received since entering the WNBA.

The 6'4" forward was the 2018 Rookie of the Year. She has a pair of MVPs and Defensive Player of the Year Awards. She's also a five-time All-Star and four-time All-WNBA honoree through six seasons.

The 2023 season is when Wilson fully ascended into a different tier. She averaged 22.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.2 blocks during the regular season and then carried the Aces sans Candace Parker and eventually Chelsea Gray to their second straight championship.

You could stack what Wilson did last year against pretty much any other single season from the biggest legends in WNBA history.

Right now is simply the time to appreciate what Wilson is providing on a nightly basis. The moment is bound to arrive further down the line when fans can discuss her overall legacy.
