Where Jared Goff's $212M Contract Ranks Among Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, NFL QBs
The Detroit Lions' internal spending spree continued Monday with a headline move.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the NFC North team and quarterback Jared Goff agreed to a four-year, $212 million contract extension with $170 million in guarantees. The deal makes the 29-year-old the highest-paid player in Detroit franchise history and keeps him under contract through the 2028 campaign.
It is quite the deal from an average annual value perspective at $53 million per season once the extension starts.

Here is where it will rank on an average annual basis compared to other quarterbacks, per Over The Cap:
- Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals: $55 million per year
- Jared Goff, Detroit Lions, $53 million per year
- Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers, $52.5 million per year
- Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens, $52 million per year
- Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles, $51 million per year
And here is where the $212 million total will rank compared to his peers:
- Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs, $450 million
- Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals, $275 million
- Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers, $262.5 million
- Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens, $260 million
- Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills, $258 million
- Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles, $255 million
- Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals, $230.5 million
- Deshaun Watson, Cleveland Browns, $230 million
- Jared Goff, Detroit Lions, $212 million
The Lions won their division for the first time since the 1993 campaign during the 2023 season and have wasted no time keeping that core together.
Detroit agreed to a four-year, $120 million contract extension with $77 million guaranteed for wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and agreed to a four-year, $112 million contract extension with $85 million guaranteed for offensive tackle Penei Sewell.
Both of those moves were done last month and seemed to set up an ensuing agreement with Goff considering he was set to enter the final year of his contract in 2024 on his previous deal.
General manager Brad Holmes made it seem like only a matter of time before something would get done when he addressed Goff's status during a Thursday appearance on WXYT (h/t Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk).
"First and foremost, he's earned an extension," Holmes said. "It's important, it's a high priority for us and both sides are working really, really hard and these things just take time."
That hard work resulted in quite the deal.
Goff can now focusing on helping lead the Lions to the next step after they reached the NFC Championship Game last season. He was largely brilliant throughout the campaign and completed 67.3 percent of his passes for 4,575 yards, 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
He also had four touchdown passes and zero interceptions during the team's playoff run, although the Lions ended up blowing a 24-7 halftime lead to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game.
All attention in Detroit will be on bouncing back from that loss and maintaining its status as one of the best teams in the NFL.
And Goff will be doing all that on a new contract extension.
