NCAA Lacrosse Tournament 2024: Quarterfinal Bracket, Schedule and Round 1 Results

The 2024 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse featured Round of 16 action this weekend as teams challenged for berths in Hempstead, New York and Towson, Maryland for the quarterfinal round.

Top seeds defending their home turf was a trend, although some lower seeds did threaten to play spoiler.

Here's a look at the weekend's results and how they happened, in addition to who will be battling for spots in the Final Four.

Sunday Recaps

No. 1 Notre Dame 14, Albany 9

The defending champions took care of business in the first round.

The Fighting Irish took on an Albany team that had just defeated Sacred Heart in the preliminary round to earn a chance to dethrone Notre Dame. Despite some gritty play from the Great Danes, Notre Dame is moving on with a 14-9 win.

Albany took a 5-4 lead into halftime after a four-goal charge in the second quarter, but two consecutive five-goal quarters helped propel Notre Dame to the quarterfinal.

Devon McLane paced the Fighting Irish attack with four goals, Jake Taylor and Pat Kavanagh had three goals each while Jordan Faison, Chris Kavanagh, Reilly Gray and Max Busenkell contributed the other tallies. Ryan Doherty led the Great Danes with three goals.

No. 8 Georgetown 12, Penn State 9

Penn State appeared poised to pull off the upset against Georgetown.

Instead, the Hoyas got the last laugh

Penn State took a 5-1 lead after the first quarter, but the Hoyas cut the deficit to just one at 7-6 before halftime. Penn State would enter the final quarter with a 9-7 lead, but a 3-0 run from Georgetown in the final frame secured the win and a trip to the quarterfinals.

Jordan Wray led the Hoyas with four goals and Jack Schubert was next with three. Patrick Crogan added two goals while the rest of the scoring came from lone tallies from Ty Banks, Graham Bundy Jr. and Aidan Carroll. The Nittany Lions were led by three goals from Matt Traynor.

No. 4 Syracuse 20, Towson 15

The final game of the weekend was the one that saw the most offensive firepower.

Towson and Syracuse combined for 11 goals in the first quarter and 35 total, but it was the hosts who punched a ticket to the quarterfinal.

Towson took a 6-5 first-quarter lead and a 9-8 lead at the half. However, the Orange truly took over in the third quarter with a 9-1 charge.

Towson would get five back in the fourth but the damage was done.

The Orange were led by four goals each from Joey Spallina and Owen Hiltz. Syracuse also got a three-goal effort from Jake Stevens and two goals each from Michael Leo and Finn Thomson. Towson was led in scoring by four goals from Alex Roussel.

No. 2 John's Hopkins 13, Lehigh 10

Lehigh did not make it easy on John Hopkins, but the Blue Jays were able to claim a tough 13-10 victory through a tightly-contested matchup.

The Blue Jays had a 5-4 halftime lead and entered the final quarter with a slim 8-7 edge.

However, Lehigh was able to take a 10-9 lead in the final quarter and looked like a real threat to pull off the upset. Instead, Johns Hopkins scored the final four goals of the game and kept its national title hopes alive.

Matt Collison led the Blue Jays with four goals while Garrett Degnon, Johnathan Peshko and Jacob Angelus each had two. Quinn Armstrong led Lehigh with three goals.
