Heat Rumors: Bam Adebayo Expected to Get 'Lucrative' Contract Extension in Offseason
The Miami Heat are reportedly expected to offer center Bam Adebayo a "lucrative" long-term extension this offseason.
Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald reported the Heat are expected to offer Adebayo a new contract despite him having two years remaining on his current deal.
Whether Adebayo takes the contract will likely depend on whether he makes an All-NBA team. The Heat could offer Adebayo a four-year, $245 million supermax contract if he's selected to one of the three teams, which seems unlikely.
The NBA moved to positionless All-NBA teams for this season, and Adebayo will likely find himself on the outside in as a result. Adebayo would have had a better shot at All-NBA honors under the previous voting system, which required a center to be named to each team.
Adebayo averaged 19.3 points, 10.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game in 2023-24. He remained one of the NBA's most versatile defenders among big men, able to use his length near the rim and his quickness on the perimeter to switch pick-and-rolls.
The 26-year-old finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting behind Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert and San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama. He has finished in the top five in DPOY voting each of the last five seasons.
It's noteworthy that the Heat seem so outwardly willing to extend Adebayo when, at the same time, team president Pat Riley didn't seem overly keen on the idea of doing the same for Jimmy Butler. Riley took a surprisingly hard line on Butler during his end-of-season press conference, saying his star's availability will play a factor in the decision.
"We have not discussed that internally right now," Riley said. "We have to look at making that kind of commitment and when do we do it. We don't have to do it until 2025, actually. But we'll see. We haven't made a decision on it, and we haven't really in earnest discussed it."
Butler played in 60 games during the 2023-24 regular season but missed the Heat's first-round series against the Boston Celtics with a knee injury.
