Report: Jayden Daniels, Commanders Punter Tress Way Discussing Deal for No. 5 Jersey

Julia StumbaughMay 9, 2024

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels had a "great" conversation with veteran punter Tress Way about a potential deal for his No. 5 jersey, according to NBC Sports' JP Finlay.

A jersey swap "could happen soon," Finlay reported.

Daniels is looking to retain the number he wore during his 2023 Heisman Trophy season at LSU.

Way has worn No. 5 through 10 seasons and 162 appearances for the Commanders, including during his 2019 and 2022 Pro Bowl campaigns.

If the Commanders are planning on announcing a number swap between the two players, the news could be coming soon.

D.C sports reporter Kevin Sheehan on a Tuesday episode of The Kevin Sheehan Show on The Team 980 that the team is planning on releasing a video featuring both Way and Daniels this week.

Formerly a four-year starter at Oklahoma, Way went undrafted in 2013 before signing with the Chicago Bears.

The Commanders claimed him off waivers in 2014, and he has served as the team's starting punter ever since. He is currently signed through next season and set to become an unrestricted free agent prior to his age-36 campaign in 2025.

Washington is hoping to see a similarly long tenure from Daniels after using the No. 2 pick of the 2024 NFL Draft to select the former LSU star. His first contract is set to span four years, with a fifth-year option for 2028, per Spotrac.

Way told The Washington Post in 2015 that he didn't originally choose No. 5.

"It was the number they gave me when I walked through the door," Way said during his second NFL season. "I didn't choose it. But No. 5 was cool with me. I'm just glad to be here."

After a decade with the team, that random number has become synonymic with Way in Washington. Daniels will likely be exchanging something with the veteran punter in order to start the 2024 season in his customary No. 5.
