Jets' Jordan Travis 'Trying to Get Ready as Fast as Possible' amid Leg Injury Rehab
New York Jets rookie quarterback Jordan Travis is "trying to get ready as fast as possible" amid his continued recovery from the leg injury that ended his 2023 season in college.
"Obviously, that's the goal, but I want to be 100 percent, too," he said after rookie minicamp.
Travis told reporters in March he envisioned being good to go well ahead of training camp. Head coach Robert Saleh followed up to say that remains the general timetable. He said the Jets are hopeful the first-year signal-caller is fully healthy by late July.
Along with providing an update on his health, Travis spoke broadly about his goals in the NFL. He told reporters Saturday he "100 percent" believes he can be a starting quarterback in the NFL and has envisioned replacing Aaron Rodgers one day in the Big Apple.
Given Rodgers' age (40) and the extent to which he waffled about his future toward the end of his Green Bay Packers run, the Jets could already be sketching out potential succession plans.
In April, general manager Joe Douglas set a goal of emulating the 1990s Green Bay Packers and building a "quarterback factory." Mark Brunell, Matt Hasselbeck and Aaron Brooks were both Packers draft picks who went on to have solid careers elsewhere. Green Bay also planned well ahead when it selected Rodgers in the 2005 draft.
Few franchises have done a worse job at developing QBs through the years than the Jets, so Douglas' vision would be a massive departure from the past. It sounds like Travis will be mentally ready to assume his role in that plan if the moment comes.
