NBA Rumors: Suns to 'Take a Hard Look at' HC Vogel, Coaching Staff After Wolves Sweep
The Phoenix Suns may be changing coaches for the second time in as many seasons.
Shams Charania and Doug Haller of The Athletic reported Suns ownership is expected to evaluate the status of head coach Frank Vogel and his entire staff after the team's frustrating first-round sweep by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Vogel went 49-33 in his first season with the Suns but struggled to reach his team. The relationship between Vogel and his players deteriorated to the point one told The Athletic he had to stifle a laugh when the coach attempted to light into the locker room during an April 9 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.
Vogel signed a five-year, $31 million contract to replace Monty Williams last offseason. Expected to compete for a championship after acquiring Bradley Beal to pair with Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, the Suns instead needed a win on the final day of the regular season to avoid the Play-In Tournament.
The Athletic reported Durant spent most of the season frustrated with his offensive role, feeling he spent too much time in the corner and not enough as a focal point. Beal dealt with injuries the entire season and struggled mightily during the first-round loss to Minnesota.
Booker called out the Suns' lack of cohesion in his post-game press conference Sunday night.
"Roster-wise, everybody talks about the firepower, but you look around the league: It comes down to the details," Booker told reporters. "I don't want to keep saying that, but it's a super important thing. You can't just go out there and think you're going to win off talent. The game is more complicated than that."
The Suns had issues that stretched far beyond coaching, ones largely related to a flawed roster construction. The acquisition of Beal and Durant left Phoenix with a top-heavy roster, the role-player cupboards left barren by the front office.
While it's fair to note Vogel didn't do his best coaching job this season, it's hard to imagine any coach making a deep playoff run with such a poor supporting cast.
