NBA Rumors: 'Increasing Belief' Suns HC Frank Vogel's Job Could Be 'In Peril'
After the Phoenix Suns fell into a 3-0 hole in their first-round playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves, it sounds like the status of head coach Frank Vogel is in jeopardy.
During Sunday's episode of NBA Countdown, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that there's an "increasing belief around the league that Frank Vogel's job is in peril."
The Suns have an unbalanced roster that relies heavily on the star trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal. After entering the year with aspirations of competing for an NBA championship, injuries and chemistry issues plagued the team throughout the season, and things appear to have reached a boiling point in the series against the Timberwolves.
Phoenix has lost all three games by double figures, including Friday's 17-point loss on its home floor in Game 3. Wojnarowski noted that the players looked "dispirited" during the contest and said it wouldn't be a surprise if changes come to the Suns this offseason if they're disappointingly eliminated from the playoffs.
"When you have this kind of payroll, these kinds of expectations, you've got to not only show more in the first round, you've got to get out of the first round," Wojnarowski said. "Losing in six last year to Denver in the second round cost Monty Williams his job. You've seen Mat Ishbia, the owner, he has made rapid change in his short tenure as owner. Frank Vogel's job very much may be in jeopardy."
Sunday's Game 4 could prove to be pivotal to Phoenix's future, as it looks like Vogel will need to find a quick solution if he hopes to keep his job.
