Report: Marvin Harrison Jr.'s NFL Jersey Won't Be Sold Until He Signs NFLPA Contract

Adam WellsApr 25, 2024

When Marvin Harrison Jr. gets selected in the 2024 NFL draft on Thursday night, fans of that team will have to wait before they can order his jersey.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Harrison has yet to sign his preliminary NFL Players' Association licensing agreement that allows his name, image and likeness to be monetized between the time he gets drafted and signing his rookie contract with the club.

Until Harrison signs the deal, his jersey won't be available for purchase and his likeness won't be featured in video games.

This is a situation that can easily resolve itself as soon as Harrison signs the deal. He could just be waiting until he's officially drafted into the league to do so.

The Ohio State standout has kept a low profile leading up to the draft, in part because he didn't do any workouts on the field at the scouting combine or during the Buckeyes' pro day.

Speaking to NFL.com's Eric Edholm, Harrison explained his decision wasn't based on any assurances of where he might be selected.

"That's not why I decided to not do anything, because I was confident where I was going," Harrison said. "You know, whatever happens, whoever drafts me, I think they've done their research, and I've talked to them. They understand where my health is, and they know my skills and my skill set."

It wouldn't be unheard of if Harrison decided not to sign an NFLPA licensing agreement. Former linebacker LaVar Arrington's name and likeness weren't included in Madden 2004 due to a dispute over the union's rules regarding group marketing, advertising and licensing deals.

The most famous example of this situation involved former MLB superstar Barry Bonds. He opted out of the MLBPA's licensing agreement starting with the 2004 season, allowing him to pursue his own licensing opportunities.

This resulted in Bonds' likeness being replaced in the MVP Baseball video game series by an avatar on the San Francisco Giants who was named Jon Dowd.
