Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence Says New Contract 'Not Really My Focus' amid Extension Talks

Doric SamApr 16, 2024

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is eligible to receive a contract extension this offseason, but he's not looking to rush the process.

"There's definitely been some conversations as far as where that's at now," Lawrence told reporters Tuesday at the start of Jacksonville's voluntary offseason practices. "It's not really my focus, I'd love to obviously be a Jag for as long as possible. We love it here and I love where we're headed as an organization and feel like I'm just getting better. My best ball is definitely ahead of me. From that standpoint, obviously yeah, that would be great. But like I said, going into my fourth year, it's not like this is necessarily going to be my last season."

Lawrence, who is entering his fourth season, is almost certainly to have his fifth-year option picked up for the 2025 campaign. He reiterated that he doesn't plan on going anywhere anytime soon, so he's not worried about negotiations over a potential extension.

"It's not really my focus right now, at the end of the day, my job isn't going to change whether I get extended or not before this season," he said. "My job is to go win games and to be the best I can be for this team so we can have a chance to win the Super Bowl. Even if I get the contract extension, that's still my job even more so, there's even more expectation and pressure on that. For me, I have the same focus and the same mindset."

After Lawrence helped lead Jacksonville to the AFC South title in 2022, the Jaguars started the 2023 season hot but disappointingly lost five of their last six games and fell short of the playoffs.

The 2021 No. 1 pick threw for 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last season. He made it clear that he will be motivated to put forth a better showing in 2024.

"You just have to use it, so that's what I plan to do from last season," he said. "I think our approach as a team, too, it's a waste if you don't use it. You went through that experience and then you don't use it, it's double bad because it sucked going through it and you didn't get better from it. I think that's our mindset, that's my mindset moving forward and so many things to learn from."
