NBA Rumors: Nets GM Sean Marks to Return Despite Struggles, Will Lead HC Search
Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks will return next season despite a tumultuous season, per the New York Post's Brian Lewis.
Lewis reported that Marks will make the hire for the Nets' next head coach after Brooklyn fired Jacque Vaughn.
The Nets have had a disappointing season at 32-48 on the year and facing a playoff absence, but Lewis reports that team owner Joe Tsai is still confident in his general manager who has led the front office since 2016.
According to Lewis, Marks said he and Tsai will work together in the head coaching search.
"Joe and I have always been in complete partnership," Marks said earlier. "And it doesn't mean we always agree. I mean, you have to have good discussions and robust discussions, but Joe and I will make this decision, and he has given me no reason to believe that I won't be able to make that decision.
"By the end of this I have no doubt that we'll come and find the best person fit for this job."
Under Marks, the Nets have reached the postseason five times, but have not made it past the conference semifinals. Brooklyn's best season in Marks' tenure was the 2020-21 season when Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden led it to a 48-24 record. The Nets were just shy of reaching the conference finals that year.
Marks has dealt with a handful of coaching searches since taking over in Brooklyn. The Nets fired Kenny Atkinson during the 2019-20 season before hiring Steve Nash, whose time ended at the beginning of the 2022-23 season.
The Nets hired Vaughn shortly after he was named interim head coach in November 2022, but he was fired in February after a 21-33 start.
Brooklyn's season comes to an end on Sunday with a season finale matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers, and then Marks will begin what will be a long offseason searching for the next head coach of the Nets.
