7 NHL Personalities and Their MultiVersus Equivalents

Sara CivianApr 12, 2024

The most recent Stanley Cup champions, the Vegas Golden Knights and Colorado Avalanche, will face off April 14—but it's going to look a little bit different. They're going to be portrayed as various Warner Bros. Discovery characters in a crossover with the MultiVersus video game.

The Colorado-Vegas matchup will use NHL Edge tracking technology along with Hawk-Eye innovations' optical tracking tech to impose MultiVersus character models over Knights and Avalanche players.

It got us thinking: Which MultiVersus characters most align with players around the league?

Connor McDavid as Superman

1 of 6

Superman once asked, "Why am I so different from them?"

The best hockey player in the world is too humble to ever say something like that, but there's no denying he's a step above the rest of the league, and it's not particularly close. Year after year, Connor McDavid puts up herculean efforts, scores well over 100 points and threatens the records he set himself.

Superman is all about hope, and McDavid has restored hope to Edmonton that hasn't been evident since the Wayne Gretzky days. He also provides inspiration and hope for hockey players of all ages.

No Superman is without kryptonite, though, and McDavid has had to fight against, well, some poor decisions from his own front office that haven't always put him in a position to succeed and win a Stanley Cup. The team has been improving consistently the past few seasons, though, and Superman and Co. might finally do it this year.

Sidney Crosby as LeBron James

2 of 6

Two sports icons of their generation, Sidney Crosby and LeBron James have tons in common. And yes, LeBron is a MultiVersus character (Space Jam, people!)

Both Crosby and James are at the top of their games in leadership, will to win, and lore—and have been for over a decade. Both have given generations of hockey and basketball fans a love of their respective games and a clear figure to look up to.

Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark as Tom and Jerry

Not sure if Tom and Jerry would ever hug, but Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark are perfect complements to each other just like everyone's favorite cat-and-mouse combination.

In a way, Swayman and Ullmark can be seen as rivals, "fighting" for the No. 1 spot in the Boston net. Tom and Jerry are obviously rivals, but they thrive off each other. They need each other to be the best version of themselves, just like this goalie tandem.

John Tortorella as Taz

4 of 6

While Taz is officiating the NHL's MultiVersus crossover, his temper is perhaps more aligned with Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella.

Taz is notorious for that quick temper and passion, and although these things might be off-putting at first blush, we find them growing on us. Sounds like a certain head coach who keeps making the headlines.

Brad Marchand as Bugs Bunny

5 of 6

Bugs is shrewd, irreverent, quick-witted and outspoken. He's got a million tricks up his sleeve. If you think of which Looney Toon is most likely to lick an opponent or scheme in creative ways to win, it's him. This, of course, has Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand written all over it.

Bugs' quick wit is what gives him power over his enemies, and Marchand was recently voted one of the top players his peers hate playing against but would love to have on their team. He's the mischievous trickster of the NHL.

Matthew Tkachuk as the Joker

6 of 6

I can't imagine Matthew Tkachuk starting last season's Stanley Cup Final tear by doing anything other than proclaiming: "And...here...we...go!"

Still, Tkachuk and the Panthers came up one series short and lost to the Golden Knights in the Final, so Tkachuk is out looking for revenge this time around. Is he a villain? It depends who you ask, but his aggressive nature on the ice has certainly earned him some enemies.

Say what you will about the Joker—he's violent and terrorizes the city of Gotham—but he gets things done and has an extremely loyal crew.

Some people just want to watch the world burn.
