Robert Griffin III Slams Cowboys for Having 'the Worst Offseason in the NFL'

Adam WellsApr 9, 2024

Add Robert Griffin III to the list of analysts piling on the Dallas Cowboys.

On Tuesday's episode of Get Up, Griffin said Jerry Jones' team has had "the worst offseason in the NFL."

Griffin cited the Cowboys losing starting center Tyler Biadasz, left tackle Tyron Smith and not having a starter at running back among the reasons for their disappointing offseason.

The 2011 Heisman Trophy winner was also critical of the team for having not already extended CeeDee Lamb and the possibility of Dak Prescott playing out the final year of his current deal.

In the wake of the Cowboys' playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers, Griffin did say Dallas should draft Shedeur Sanders to eventually replace Prescott.

To be fair, in the same video, Griffin did say the Cowboys "can win a Super Bowl" with Prescott as their starting quarterback.

There's certainly no argument that the vibes coming from the Cowboys right now are very strange. Prescott told reporters in March he was "definitely confident" about working out an extension, in part because it would lower his 2024 cap number to help the team improve the roster for next season.

While there doesn't have to be a timeline to get a new deal done during the offseason, it would have benefited the Cowboys to work something out before the start of free agency.

They did convert Prescott's $5 million roster bonus into a signing bonus that lowered his cap hit by $4 million, but he's still on track to enter next season on the final year of his current contract.

Prescott's deal also includes a no-tag provision, so he will be a true free agent next offseason if he doesn't sign an extension.

Extending Lamb would seem like a given, especially early so they can get out in front of potential deals for receivers like Justin Jefferson, Brandon Aiyuk and Tee Higgins.

Lamb set career-highs with 135 receptions, 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns to earn All-Pro first-team honors. The 25-year-old is set to earn $17.99 million in 2024, the final season of his rookie contract.

It's much easier to explain Dallas' decision to let Smith and Tony Pollard leave in free agency. Smith remains extremely effective when he plays, but he's 33 and hasn't played more than 13 games in a season since 2015.

Pollard's first test as the full-time starter was a disappointment. The 26-year-old did surpass 1,000 rushing yards, but he averaged a career-low 4.0 yards per carry and only had one game with more than 80 yards on the ground.

The Cowboys can find a running back capable of starting in the draft. They could also go with a rotation of Deuce Vaughn, Rico Dowdle and Malik Davis.

For a team that has won 12 games and made the playoffs in each of the past three seasons, the Cowboys feel like they are trending in the wrong direction. But they also had a roster without many significant flaws that needed to be addressed in free agency.

The Cowboys were the last team to sign an external free agent when they agreed to a deal with linebacker Eric Kendricks, though this actually isn't new for the organization. They did it in 2022 and things worked out okay for them that season with an appearance in the NFC Divisional Round before losing to the San Francisco 49ers.

If training camp opens and neither Prescott or Lamb has signed an extension, then the panic meter can start to spike for Cowboys fans.
