Bills' Updated Depth Chart After Stefon Diggs Trade, 2024 NFL Free Agency Contracts

The offseason of roster losses reportedly continued in a major way for the Buffalo Bills on Wednesday.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Bills traded wide receiver Stefon Diggs, a 2024 sixth-round draft pick and a 2025 fifth-round draft pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for a 2025 second-round draft pick that comes via the Minnesota Vikings.

Schefter noted the Bills have lost several key players this offseason, including Diggs, safety Jordan Poyer, cornerback Tre'Davious White, center Mitch Morse, wide receiver Gabriel Davis, linebacker Tyrel Dodson and linebacker Leonard Floyd.

Here is a look at their current depth chart:

  • WR: Curtis Samuel, Khalil Shakir, Justin Shorter, Mack Hollins
  • TE: Dalton Kincaid, Dawson Knox
  • LT: Dion Dawkins, Ryan Van Demark
  • LG: David Edwards, Alec Anderson
  • C: Connor McGovern, Will Clapp
  • RG: O'Cyrus Torrence, Kevin Jarvis

It would be reasonable to expect the Bills to take a step back during the upcoming campaign after losing so many impact players, especially since they have been among the best teams in the league in recent years.

They are coming off five consecutive playoff appearances and four straight AFC East crowns with quarterback Josh Allen leading the way, although they never made it over the hump to reach the Super Bowl in large part because of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Expectations may have to be ramped down some now that the No. 1 wide receiver during that stretch is no longer on the roster.

Diggs surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in each of the last six seasons, including when he posted a league-best 127 catches for 1,535 yards and eight touchdowns in 2020. He may have lost a step at 30 years old, but he still finished the 2023 season with 107 catches for 1,183 yards and eight touchdowns.

Buffalo did add Curtis Samuel this offseason, and he will be even more important following the departure of Diggs.

He is versatile enough to help the offense as an outside receiver, slot receiver or even running back and figures to see plenty of opportunities. The Bills could also look to add a wide receiver with the No. 28 overall pick of the draft.

This year's draft has a deep wide receiver class, so there should still be impressive weapons available even near the bottom of the first round.

For now, though, it would be fair for Bills fans to expect something of a downturn in 2024.
