Donovan Mitchell: 'It's F--king April,' Cavs 'Gotta Be Better' After Nuggets Loss
Donovan Mitchell is fed up with the Cleveland Cavaliers' disappointing play of late.
Mitchell ripped into his team following Sunday's 130-101 loss to the Denver Nuggets, saying the Cavs need to get their act together ahead of the playoffs.
"We can all point to s--t. It's April. It's f---king April. We've got to figure it out. Gotta be better," Mitchell told reporters.
The Cavs have dropped five of their last seven games and now sit three games behind the Milwaukee Bucks in the loss column for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. It would take a notable collapse from Milwaukee for the Cavs to eclipse the Bucks for a top-two seed with only seven games remaining on Cleveland's schedule.
The Cavs looked lethargic on defense throughout Sunday's blowout loss, allowing Denver to hit a jaw-dropping 63.6 percent of its threes and 57.5 percent of its shots overall. Nikola Jokić led the way with 26 points, 18 rebounds and 16 assists for the Nuggets, while Mitchell was held to an ugly 13-point performance.
Mitchell was playing in just his fourth game in the month of March and is clearly not yet at 100 percent. He hasn't scored 20 points in a game since Feb. 27, which is coincidentally his only 20-point game since the All-Star break.
Darius Garland and Evan Mobley have also spent much of the season dealing with injuries, which has hurt Cleveland's ability to coalesce as a team.
Given Milwaukee's underperformance relative to its talent, this season was an opportunity for the Cavs to put themselves in a position for a deep playoff run. However, their own issues as the playoffs approach could put them in danger of a first-round exit for the second straight season.
