Under Armour All-America Game 2012: Why No Dorial Green-Beckham Ruins Hype
With Dorial Green-Beckham, the nation's No. 1 high school football player, skipping the 2012 Under Armour All-America Game tonight, the event will lack appeal for some. The annual high school all-star game takes place at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., at 7 p.m. EST.
Without the premier name in high school football, the game will lack a little bit of its luster.
It should come as no surprise. The player Rivals.com acknowledges as the top recruit in the nation has chosen the US Army All-American Bowl over Under Armour every year, except last year, ever since Under Armour's inaugural game in 2008. The two games compete every year for the nation's top high school talent.
Last year, Jadeveon Clowney, now of South Carolina, was the first top recruit, per Rivals.com, to participate at Under Armour's talent showcase.
DGB is a 6'6", dual-sport monster from Springfield, Mo. He hasn't committed, but he lists Arkansas, Oklahoma, hometown Missouri and others, but those mentioned specifically are considered front-runners. He excels at basketball almost as much as he does on the gridiron.
It is unclear whether he plans to play both in college. He has drawn comparisons to Andre Johnson and Randy Moss, so this is a supreme talent, as you can see from these highlights:
Even with DGB's absence, there are still noteworthy players attending. Here are a few of them...
Eddie Goldman - DT - 6'4", 307 pounds
Goldman is the second-highest-rated prospect, behind DGB, in the nation. He has not committed either, but he has plenty of schools after him. According to ESPN.com, Goldman has received over 50 scholarship offers, including from Florida, Miami, Auburn, Alabama and other college heavyweights.
Many liken him to Ndamukong Suh, but Goldman is only 17 years old. It is scary and exciting to think how good he can become.
Mario Edwards - DE - 6'4", 275 pounds
Edwards is headed for Florida State after a dominant high school career. He may have a future on the inside, or as a player that can be moved around on the line, a la Julius Peppers. He is the fourth-rated prospect in the nation.
The young Seminoles defense will get even stronger when Edwards arrives on campus.
Trey Griffey - WR - 6'2", 195 pounds
Griffey is the son of baseball great Ken Griffey Jr., but he is making a name for himself on the football field. He initially had no scholarship offers, but a strong junior season has changed that. He now has 10 offers, and could have more shortly.
Griffey adds a little star power and name recognition to the Under Armour roster.
