NFL Rumors: Raheem Mostert, Dolphins Agree to New 2-Year Contract Worth Up to $9M

Julia StumbaughMar 29, 2024

Miami Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert has agreed to a two-year deal worth up to $9.075 million that will keep him in Miami through the 2025 season, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mostert's agent Brett Tessler.

Mostert's previous deal offering base salary of $2.35 million was set to expire after the 2024 season.

Mostert is heading into his third season with the Dolphins. The nine-season veteran earned the first Pro Bowl nod of his career while leading the NFL with 18 rushing touchdowns in 2023.

The restructured contract guarantees Mostert $3.71 million over two years, Barry Jackson reported for the Miami Herald.

Although Mostert turns 32 in April, making him one of the oldest running backs in the NFL, he recorded a career-high 1,012 yards during his age-31 season with the Dolphins.

Dolphins were one of six NFL teams to combine for more than 2,300 rushing yards in 2023 in large part due to Mostert's efforts.

After their last postseason berth ended with a Wild Card loss for the second straight season, the Dolphins are looking to make a deeper run in 2024.

Mostert is certain to be a critical part of that push, as long as he can stay healthy. Although the veteran running back has been available for 29 starts in two seasons with the Dolphins, he was plagued by injuries throughout his five full seasons with the San Francisco 49ers between 2017 and 2021.

The Dolphins' front office will now need to consider other potential extensions, including one for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Like Mostert, Tagovailoa earned his first Pro Bowl nomination in 2023 while leading the NFL with 4,624 receiving yards. His contract, which guarantees him $23.1 million for the 2024 season, is currently set to expire next spring.

In addition to the Dolphins freeing up $18.5 million with their expected post-June 1 cut of cornerback Xavien Howard, per NFL.com's Kevin Patra, Mostert's projected cap hit of $3.36 million will now decrease in 2024, Jackson reported. That should give the Dolphins more flexibility to work on Tagovailoa's next deal.
