ESPNU 150: Prep Stars Who Will Make Biggest Impact in Big Ten
The Big Ten went 4-6 in postseason play this year, but the future looks bright thanks to some big-time recruits that will soon join the conference.
With bowl season coming to a close, college football teams are hitting the recruiting trail hard. National Signing Day is less than a month away, which means time is running out to make pitches and sway the opinion of elite recruits.
The SEC is dominating now, but the conference is making strides to be the best in the country. It all starts with recruiting, though, and the Big Ten is set to get some future stars.
With that said, here are three recruits in the ESPNU Top 150 that will help keep the Big Ten strong.
Noah Spence, DE, Ohio State
The No. 4 overall player, Spence took one visit to Ohio State and was hooked. The addition of Urban Meyer as head coach played a huge role in his decision.
Toss in the fact that he should see playing time right away to help strengthen the Buckeyes pass rush, and the Big Ten has one dynamic impact player for years to come.
Spence is only going to grow and get better throughout his career. He's quick off the edge and thrives at getting after the quarterback.
Listed at 6'4", 245 pounds, Spence will need to add bulk, but it's not a big worry with how good strength and conditioning programs are at the college level.
Terry Richardson, CB, Michigan
The Wolverines defense this past season was the main reason they had such great success. Adding help to the secondary will be key, and Richardson is sure to shine once he gets the chance to play.
Rated as the fourth best cornerback in the nation, Richardson has the speed to keep up with elite receivers.
Listed at 5'9", 160 pounds, he'll definitely need to add weight once he joins the Wolverines. What he lacks in size, though, he makes up for with his intense play.
Richardson is a physical player, and since Rivals.com compares him to Cortland Finnegan, you know that he is bound to do great things for Michigan. Putting on the weight will be key, though, but it shouldn't be a big issue.
Kyle Kalis, OT, Michigan
ESPN has Kalis as the 20th best offensive tackle in the country, but Rivals.com has him as the No. 21 overall player.
Different sites have conflicting opinions as far as rankings, but they all agree Kalis will be a special player for the Wolverines.
Listed at 6'5", 305 pounds, Kalis has great athletic ability for his size. Rivals compares him to Joe Thomas of the Cleveland Browns, which is a very good sign.
The Wolverines run game will become a big factor as head coach Brady Hoke shifts toward his style of offense, and this season we saw the beginning of that.
With Kalis, Michigan's offensive front with maintain its strength, helping pave the way for talented running backs to make big plays.
