Hokies' David Wilson Set to Make Decision on NFL Draft Friday Morning

Eric BowmanJun 7, 2018

Update: Jan 6. at 2:46 p.m.

According to the Washington Post, Wilson will forgo his senior season and enter the NFL draft. This is crushing blow for Virginia Tech, as they will have a very inexperience backfield for 2012.

All this does is put more pressure on QB Logan Thomas to be the best player in the ACC. If the Hokies want to win, that's exactly what Thomas will have to be.

The Virginia Tech Hokies top running back, David Wilson, is gaining lots of attention from NFL scouts, and he will soon decide if leaving college early for the NFL is his best move.

According to Andy Bitter of the Roanoke Times, Wilson will make his decision on Friday morning.

Should Wilson go pro, it will be the second year in a row that a Hokies' running back has left the program early.

Thanks to Wilson, the Hokies' run game didn't miss a beat with the loss of Ryan Williams and Darren Evans, but next year could be a different story.

If Wilson were to return for his senior season, the Hokies would be strong contenders to win the ACC. They would've won this year, but the Hokies had a hard time beating the Clemson Tigers.

Quarterback Logan Thomas will be much improved next season, but without Wilson behind him, there would be much more pressure on him to win.

Projected as the No. 3 running back for the 2012 NFL draft, Wilson is expected to be taken by the third round at the latest.

Bleacher Report's NFL draft guru Matt Miller was asked on Twitter where he sees Wilson going.

In Virginia Tech's 23-20 overtime loss in the Sugar Bowl to the Michigan Wolverines, Wilson was kept in check for a good portion of the game, but he was able to show what he could do in the open space.

Once Wilson turned the corner on a few plays, he was hard to take down. His effort of fighting for more yards and making defenders miss did not go unnoticed by NFL scouts.

Choosing to hold a press conference as opposed to just telling the beat writer right away could be an indication Wilson will go pro.

His ceiling is high right now, and oftentimes that means a player will leave early. Plus, the career of a running back in the NFL isn't extremely long these days, and it could end a moments notice. One injury is all it takes to ruin a career.

If Wilson believes he's done all he can at Virginia Tech, then going pro is the right move. It won't be long before we know his answer, and the decision will have a major impact on how the Hokies fare for 2012.
