Manny Pacquiao: Who Is Pac-Man's Next Opponent Since Mayweather Is Unavailable?

Wes ODonnellJan 5, 2012

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. won't be able to get in the ring with one another again because of Floyd's legal trouble.

Money Mayweather's next fight will be staying in shape while serving three months of his six-month jail sentence (three months are suspended), but Pac-Man's next fight is still up in the air.

ESPN's Dan Rafael tells us that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is flying to Philippines this Sunday to discuss four opponents with the pound-for-pound champ:

With Mayweather out of the mix for the time being, as he is scheduled to begin serving a three-month jail term on Friday for a domestic abuse conviction, Arum said the list he will offer to Pacquiao includes Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto, Timothy Bradley Jr. and Lamont Peterson.

"I'll sit with Manny and explain everything to him, tell him what I think each of these fights would do on pay-per-view," Arum told ESPN.com on Wednesday. "We'll talk about what (trainer) Freddie (Roach) thinks and about what (Top Rank matchmaker) Bruce (Trampler) thinks. Then I'll let Manny make the decision on which opponent he wants to fight, which I am sure he will do while I am there."

Arum is flying to Manila with Michael Konz, Pacquiao's adviser, who will also attend the meeting.

"Besides the opponent, the other thing we need to discuss is whether he'll fight in May or June," Arum said.

"

Obviously the opportunity for a true "super-fight" is out.

As for the four potential opponents, only two really stick out.

A rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez doesn't do much for Pacquiao. It'll certainly draw some interest, but Pac-Man—regardless of what some have said—has now beaten his rival twice in a row in similar fashion. What is going to change this time around?

And Lamont Peterson, although a good fighter with good buzz off his win against Amir Khan, fought to a draw with Victor Ortiz and lost to Timothy Bradley.

With Bradley also an option it doesn't make much sense for Arum and Pacquiao to skip over the undefeated fighter in favor of Peterson.

The problem with the 28-0, 28-year-old Bradley is that he doesn't resonate with the fans. He's a talented fighter and is probably the most skilled fighter of the four, but he isn't exciting and won't draw much attention.

As much as Pacquiao and Arum want a good fight, they're certainly in the business of making money as well.

That leads us to Miguel Cotto. The Puerto Rican brawler has already avenged one of the losses on his resume with his demolition of Antonio Margarito and he's finally got some of his swagger back.

The last time he stepped between the ropes with Pacquiao he got shocked early and then ran away for the duration of the fight. He's improved as a fighter since then and certainly will draw more of a crowd after his win over Margs.

He's still unlikely to beat Pacquiao, but it'll be a better fight.

All four options bring something different to the table—and ring—and soon enough we'll find out which face is going to be pummeled by Pacquiao next.
