NFL Rumors: Terron Armstead, Dolphins Finalizing New Contract amid Retirement Buzz

After contemplating retirement earlier this offseason, veteran offensive tackle Terron Armstead reportedly isn't ready to call it a career just yet.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Armstead and the Miami Dolphins are finalizing an adjusted contract for him to return for the 2024 season.

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said at the NFL Scouting Combine last month that the team was giving Armstead the time he needed to decide whether he wanted to continue his career. In the end, he chose to return for an 11th NFL season, which will be his third in Miami.

Armstead was set to make a guaranteed $5 million in base salary with the other $8 million on his contract becoming guaranteed on the third day of the league year on March 15. His adjusted contract should provide some salary cap relief for the Dolphins, who entered the offseason $31.6 million over the cap.

An 11-year veteran, Armstead has never played a full season in his career, but he is one of the best left tackles in the league when healthy. He was selected to his fifth career Pro Bowl this past season despite being limited to 10 games. He was a second-team All-Pro selection in 2018 while he played for the New Orleans Saints.

Retaining Armstead is a strong move for a Miami team that is coming off a strong season that ended in disappointing fashion. After leading the AFC East for much of the year, the Dolphins fell short of the division title in the last week of the regular season and were eliminated from the playoffs in the AFC Wild Card Round by the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

The Dolphins will continue to retool in hopes of a better finish next season, and keeping Armstead in the fold is a step in the right direction.
