Floyd Mayweather Jail Time Postponed: Fighter to Name May 5 Opponent Next Week
With the news coming down that Floyd Mayweather would in fact not begin his 90-day jail sentence today as planned, but instead begin his jail term beginning in June, all the attention is now on the fighter Mayweather will face on May 5.
Steve Carp of the Las Vegas Review-Journal Tweeted:
"Steve Carp @stevecarprjJust talked too Leonard Ellerbe, @FloydMayweather co-manager. Said announcement on May 5 opponent to be made sometime next week.
"
We can only guess who that opponent will be.
With Top Rank president Bob Arum stating that Manny Pacquiao will not be ready to fight until June, the mega-fight that we all want to see is highly unlikely to go down on May 5.
This leaves two main opponents that Money May could face in May with Pacquiao out of the picture.
Canelo Alvarez and Robert Guerrero are the front runners for Mayweather's Cinco De Mayo showdown, with both fighters being able to provide Mayweather with a formidable foe.
The fighting community and the fans around the world can see that it is in fact Pacquiao's camp that is holding up the mega-fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao.
As with Mayweather's jail sentence being put on hold, and allowing the May 5 fight date to become a reality, Arum has now become the biggest road block in the fight ever taking place once again.
This shows that even if Pacquiao wanted to get the fight done, Arum has no interest in making the fight a reality, hurting not only the reputation of the two biggest fighters of the last decade, but the sport of boxing as a whole.
