Knicks' Jalen Brunson Diagnosed with Knee Contusion After Injury vs. Cavaliers

Doric SamMar 3, 2024

The New York Knicks have been dealing with injuries for the past few weeks, and they faced another scare in Sunday's game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau told reporters that star point guard Jalen Brunson suffered a knee contusion during the game. He underwent X-rays that came back negative. Thibodeau added that there's no timetable for how long Brunson will be out.

The Knicks initially announced that Brunson was questionable to return to the game due to a sore left knee after he suffered an injury early in the contest, but they later ruled him out for the remainder of the contest.

Brunson suffered the injury in the opening minute during New York's first possession of the game when he went up for a jump shot. He fell to the court after landing and had to be helped back to the locker room.

The diagnosis of a knee contusion should allow Knicks fans to breathe a slight sigh of relief, as many feared the worst after seeing Brunson suffer a non-contact injury. Losing the floor general for any amount of time would be devastating for New York.

Brunson was selected to the All-Star Game for the first time in his career this season. He entered Sunday's contest averaging career highs of 27.7 points and 6.7 assists while shooting 47.7 percent from the field and 40.7 percent from three-point range.

The Knicks have been without star forward Julius Randle since Jan. 27 due to a shoulder injury. Swingman OG Anunoby has also been out since that day and was forced to undergo elbow surgery. Starting center Mitchell Robinson underwent ankle surgery in December.

New York is certainly hoping that Brunson won't have to miss too much time. The team is in a tight playoff race in the competitive Eastern Conference, so staying healthy is imperative to its hopes of making a deep postseason run.
