Report: Duke's Kyle Filipowski to Play vs. Louisville After Court-Storming Injury
Duke center Kyle Filipowski is expected to suit up for Wednesday's game against Louisville, according to college basketball insider Adam Zagoria.
His status for the contest was unclear after he appeared to suffer an injury as Wake Forest fans stormed the court to celebrate the Demon Deacons' 83-79 victory over the Blue Devils last Saturday.
Head coach Jon Scheyer said Monday the sophomore was "a little bit sore."
The incident with Filipowski came a month after an Ohio State fan collided with Iowa guard Caitlin Clark to celebrate the Buckeyes' upset of the Hawkeyes.
Together, they've sparked intense debate over whether the practice of storming the court should be outlawed or made prohibitively costly in some form.
ESPN's Jay Bilas suggested arresting fans who run onto the court after a game would in all likelihood bring the practice to an end. Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne believes having schools forfeit games when their home fans storm the court would have a similar effect.
ACC commissioner Jim Phillips issued a statement shortly after Wake Forest's win saying conference officials "will continually assess with our schools the best way to protect our student-athletes, coaches, and fans."
The good news for Duke is that Filipowski won't miss any time due to what happened Saturday.
The 7-footer is the team's leading scorer (16.9 points) and rebounder (8.2 boards), and he was the Blue Devils' lone representative on the midseason shortlist for the Naismith College Player of the Year Award.
Duke already got the better of Louisville once this year, going on the road in January and earning an 83-69 victory. The team needs a win to keep pace with rival North Carolina in the race for the ACC regular-season title. The Tar Heels hold a 1.5-game lead before the Blue Devils take the floor against the Cardinals.
