GM: Commanders 'Have a Lot of Work to Do' on QB Evaluations Ahead of 2024 NFL Draft

Adam WellsFeb 28, 2024

If the Washington Commanders have a quarterback they prefer with the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL draft, they certainly aren't tipping their hand right now.

General manager Adam Peters told reporters from the NFL scouting combine Indianapolis they "still have a lot of work to do" evaluating the top quarterbacks in this year's class.

Peters is entering his first season as Washington's general manager. He joined the organization after spending the previous six years working in the San Francisco 49ers' front office, including the past three as their assistant general manager.

It seems like a certainty the Commanders will come out of the first round with a quarterback. The only questions are which one of the top three candidates from Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels do they prefer, and where do they actually end up picking?

B/R's NFL scouting department has the Commanders trading up one spot to select Williams with the top pick in its most recent mock draft. It's not hard to connect the dots between the organization and USC's star quarterback.

Washington hired Kliff Kingsbury, who was a senior offensive analyst on USC's staff last season, as its new offensive coordinator on head coach Dan Quinn's staff.

In order to move up, there has to be a willing trade partner. The Chicago Bears, who own the No. 1 pick, aren't necessarily inclined to move out of that spot right now. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Feb. 11 they will need a "historic haul of draft picks and overall compensation" to trade down.

If the Commanders end up staying at No. 2, there could be a debate over Maye and Daniels if Williams is the first player off the board. There have been several mock drafts from prominent analysts, including ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr., that have given Daniels to Washington.

The good news for Peters and the Commanders is they have plenty of time to get their evaluations done. The combine is this week, followed by pro days throughout the month of March before the draft begins on April 25.
