Rudy Gobert Hailed by Fans for Shutting Down Victor Wembanyama as T-Wolves Beat Spurs
Rudy Gobert and the Minnesota Timberwolves didn't have too much trouble dispatching Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs en route to a 114-105 home victory.
In the battle between star French bigs, Gobert posted 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting, 17 rebounds and four blocks.
Wembanyama was able to stuff the statsheet himself with 17 points, 13 boards, five assists and four blocks. However, he also shot 5-of-13 and committed five turnovers.
Wemby entered the night on an absolute tear (24.2 PPG, 11.2 RPG, 5.6 BPG, 4.8 APG, 2.8 SPG) over his last five games, which included a rare triple-double with 10 blocks.
Gobert, the clear Defensive Player of the Year favorite, was able to slow the superstar down some though.
And he also got the best of Wemby at times on the other end. Gobert produced one of the night's top highlights when he went to work on Wembanyama down low before this slam dunk:
He also had a nice putback earlier in the evening:
Gobert kept it up in the second half, going to work on Wemby once again:
The Timberwolves and Spurs entered this game in exact opposite spots of the Western Conference standings.
Wembanyama, who should coast to the NBA's Rookie of the Year award, has been carrying a heavy burden for the Spurs. Brighter days are certainly ahead for him and the team, although they aren't being realized this season.
So this game, on paper, was about as tough a matchup as Wembanyama can get. While he held his own at times and ended up with a solid performance, Gobert and his team ultimately emerged victorious on this day.
Fans and analysts alike tipped their caps toward Gobert in recognition of a great night.
Gobert and Wembanyama's matchups are now done for the 2023-24 campaign, with the T-Wolves earning three of four wins in their regular-season series.
