Warriors' Draymond Green on Bucks' Doc Rivers: You Knew What You Were Signing Up For
Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green weighed in on the recent JJ Redick vs. Doc Rivers debate and said he agreed with Redick, noting that the now Milwaukee Bucks head coach can't be making excuses when he knew what he was signing up for when he took over the team halfway through the season.
Green's thoughts on the topic occurred on his podcast, beginning at the 28-minute mark.
"Every interview is another excuse, and that just cant work," Green said.
"You knew what you were signing up for, Doc. You took over a team more than halfway through the season, losing seven of the last 10. You knew what you was getting yourself into; you knew the issues the team had before you got there.
"You knew all of these things. You can't go and make excuses now because you were actually brought in to fix those very things. So you can't come and make the same excuses for the things that were already knew, because if that's the case, you couldn't really accept the job with the money that they already gave you."
Green made very clear that he loves Rivers, something he's stated on his podcast multiple times. But he said that he can't have an excuse at every press conference.
The Bucks fired head coach Adrian Griffin despite a 30-13 start. Rivers took over the Bucks three games later, and it's certainly been an adjustment period, with the team losing seven of 10.
It hasn't been pretty, and that stretch ended with the Bucks losing 113-110 to a severely shorthanded Memphis Grizzlies team. Afterward, Rivers pointed the finger at his players (h/t Jack Baer of Yahoo Sports).
"First play of the game, we gamble for the 50th time in the corner. Guy drives, we have to help, leads to a 3. On our set, two guys forget what we're running. Then we missed a shot and nobody gets back. That's how we start out the third quarter. That tells you all you need to know about where our heads were."
"We had some guys here, we had some guys in Cabo."
Rivers has made some other eyebrow-raising comments since taking the job, perhaps none more than this:
"Taking a job when you're about to go on the toughest road trip of the season is not the smartest decision," Rivers said over the All-Star break, per Yaron Weitzman of Fox Sports.
"I even told them that: 'Can we wait 'til All-Star break?' You know, it would have been a lot nicer."
Redick, an ESPN analyst who played under Rivers on the Los Angeles Clippers, made his opinion on Rivers' remarks very clear.
"I've seen the trend for years," Redick said in part. "The trend is always making excuses. Doc, we get it. Taking over a team in the middle of the season is hard. Just like getting traded in the middle of the season is hard for a player. We get it. But it's always an excuse. It's always throwing your team under the bus."
That led to Rivers' son, ex-NBA guard Austin Rivers, and current Bucks guard Patrick Beverley jumping to the coach's defense.
Ultimately, Rivers is going to be judged on his wins and losses in Milwaukee. And right now, the Bucks don't look like a championship-contending team.
The Bucks clearly had issues before he got there, based on the firing of a first-year head coach just 43 games into his tenure. But the onus is squarely on Rivers now to make things right.
