Mavs' Kyrie Irving Out vs. Pistons with Hamstring Injury; Luka Dončić Questionable
Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving has been ruled out for Friday's game against the Detroit Pistons with left hamstring soreness, per ESPN's Tim MacMahon.
Luka Dončić is also listed as questionable for the matchup with left ankle soreness, per MacMahon.
Irving has been in-and-out of the lineup for the Mavs this season due to a number of injuries.
The 31-year-old most notably missed a 12-game stretch in December due to a heel ailment and a thumb injury had him sidelined for six games at the end of January and beginning of February.
Irving joined the Mavericks during the 2022-23 campaign in a trade from the Brooklyn Nets and he agreed to a three-year, $120 million contract with the franchise in free agency ahead of the 2023-24 campaign.
Despite missing a good chunk of time this season, Irving has been solid when he's on the court, averaging 25.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.2 assists in 58 games while shooting 49.7 percent from the floor and 41.1 percent from deep.
The 2016 NBA champion serves as Dallas' secondary scoring option behind Dončić, and the Mavs need him healthy if they hope to contend for an NBA title in an increasingly difficult Western Conference.
Whenever Irving is sidelined, the Mavericks turn to Tim Hardaway Jr., Jaden Hardy and Dante Exum alongside Dončić in the backcourt.
The Mavericks sit fifth in the Western Conference with a 50-30 record and are hoping to make a deep playoff run after missing out on the postseason in 2023.
