Shams: Nets Will Have 'Full-Blown' HC Search During Summer After Jacque Vaughn Firing
The Brooklyn Nets are expected to be very thorough in their head coaching search this summer as they look for a replacement for the recently fired Jacque Vaughn.
While interim head coach Kevin Ollie "could be part of their process," Brooklyn is "going to have a full-blown coaching search in the summer," The Athletic and Stadium's Shams Charania reported Tuesday on FanDuel TV's Run It Back.
The Nets fired Vaughn on Monday and ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski first reported that Ollie was being promoted to interim head coach before the franchise made the news official on Tuesday.
Ollie was hired as an assistant on Vaughn's staff ahead of the 2023-24 campaign after spending time as head coach of UConn, where he led the Huskies to an NCAA title in 2014. Adam Zagoria of NJ.com reported Monday that Ollie "would get a long look" for the team's full-time head coaching job.
Vaughn had been head coach of the Nets since the 2022-23 campaign. He led the team to a 64-65 record in his season and a half at the helm.
However, Brooklyn has struggled this year and sits 11th in the Eastern Conference with a 21-33 record, and it became more clear as the team continued to struggle that it needed a new leading voice.
While it's unclear who the Nets may be targeting, the team's coaching position should be attractive to potential candidates with a relatively young roster highlighted by Cam Thomas, Mikal Bridges, Cameron Johnson and Nic Claxton.
Perhaps the Nets will explore the likes of Mike Budenholzer, Nate McMillan, Mark Jackson, Terry Stotts and Mike D'Antoni for their head coaching vacancy.
More clarity on the team's head coaching search should come once the season comes to an end.
