Mac McClung Thrills Fans by Beating Jaylen Brown for 2nd NBA Slam Dunk Contest Title
Mac McClung is a two-time NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion.
McClung, who plays for the G League's Osceola Magic, defended his Slam Dunk contest title on Saturday night in Indiana with a win over Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown in the final round.
The 25-year-old took home the title last year and is now the first back-to-back Slam Dunk Contest champion since Zach LaVine in 2015 and 2016. Michael Jordan (1987, 1988), Jason Richardson (2002, 2003) and Nate Robinson (2009, 2010) are the only other competitors to have won the contest in back-to-back years.
McClung wowed the judges in the final round, opening up with a score of 48.8 on his first dunk after slamming the ball into the hoop over two people:
He then scored 50s across the board with his second dunk of the final round, jumping over Shaquille O'Neal and hitting the reverse:
McClung got the respect he deserved with his final dunk, and NBA fans couldn't help but hype up the Osceola Magic star after repeating as the champion:
Despite his success in the Slam Dunk Contest, McClung hasn't been able to stick on an NBA roster.
The Texas Tech product appeared in one game each with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers during the 2021-22 season, but he spent the majority of the year with the G League's South Bay Lakers.
Last season, McClung won the Slam Dunk Contest as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers. He played in four games for the franchise and spent much of the season with the Delaware Blue Coats.
He has spent the entire 2023-24 campaign with the Osceola Magic. Through 14 games, he's averaging 23.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 7.4 assists while shooting 51.9 percent from the floor and 39.3 percent from deep.
Given his performance this year, he deserves a shot to show an NBA franchise what he's made of. Maybe that opportunity will finally come as teams search for depth ahead of the playoffs.
