
Vince Carter, Chauncey Billups Among Finalists for 2024 Basketball Hall of Fame Class
Vince Carter and Chauncey Billups headline the list of finalists for the 2024 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
The class of 2024 finalists were announced Friday ahead of the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game and Rising Stars competition at All-Star weekend.
Michael Cooper, Walter Davis, Seimone Augustus, Dick Barnett and Michelle Timms are the other former players among the finalists.
Bo Ryan, Charles Smith, Marian Washington, Harley Redin, Doug Collins, Herb Simon and Jerry West are the former coaches and executives among the finalists.
Carter, the No. 5 pick in the 1998 draft, put together an impressive 22-year NBA career, earning the 1998-99 Rookie of the Year award, eight All-Star selections and two All-NBA honors.
Carter's 22 seasons played are the most in NBA history, though Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is closing in on that mark, now in his 21st season.
The 47-year-old spent time with the then-New Jersey Nets, Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies, Atlanta Hawks, Orlando Magic, Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns. However, he is best known for his time with the Toronto Raptors from 1998 until he was traded to the Nets during the 2004-05 season.
Carter put together some of the best seasons of his career in a Toronto uniform, averaging 23.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.0 block in 403 games across six and a half seasons while shooting 44.6 percent from the floor and 38.3 percent from deep.
The UNC product finished his career having averaged 16.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists while shooting 43.5 percent from the floor and 37.1 percent from deep in 1,541 career games.
"Unbelievable," Carter said of being a finalist, according to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). "You look in the crowd, you see Hall of Famers, and the opportunity ... I mean, you can't beat that. You can't beat that. It's a proud moment."
Billups, the No. 3 pick in the 1997 draft, is currently head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. He spent 17 seasons in the NBA between 1997-2014, suiting up for the Raptors, Boston Celtics, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks.
The 47-year-old is best known for his time with the Detroit Pistons, with whom he won an NBA title with in 2004. He was also named the 2004 NBA Finals MVP after averaging 21.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists in five games while shooting 50.9 percent from the floor and 47.1 percent from deep.
Billups also earned five All-Star selections, three All-NBA selections and two All-Defensive selections in his career.
He finished his career having averaged 15.2 points, 2.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists in 1,043 games while shooting 41.5 percent from the floor and 38.7 percent from beyond the arc.
Among the candidates to not be named a finalist for the 2024 Hall of Fame class are Penny Hardaway, Shawn Marion, Reggie Theus, Bill Laimbeer and Maurice Lucas.
