Yankees Rumors: Insiders Believe Brian Cashman is on His Final Contract with NY
As the New York Yankees prepare for the 2024 season, it sounds like it could be one of the final years of longtime general manager Brian Cashman's tenure with the team.
As SNY's Andy Martino explained, "Cashman is beginning the second season of a four-year contract. There are close colleagues who speculate, without knowing for sure, that it will be Cashman's last deal as GM of the Yankees."
Martino noted that he's directly asked Cashman "multiple times" about his future with the team, but "he neither confirms nor denies it, typically saying he doesn't think that far ahead."

Cashman has been a member of the Yankees organization since 1986 and took over as GM in 1998. While New York has not had a losing season since 1992, Cashman referred to the 82-80 finish to the 2023 season as a "disaster." The disappointing campaign has created a sense of urgency within the organization this year that could lead to a change in philosophy.
"While it is very difficult to imagine [managing general partner Hal] Steinbrenner firing Cashman in the middle of that contract, there is definitely win-now sense around here that makes one wonder what will change if the team does not make a significant October run this year--and if Cashman and Steinbrenner will decide to think about a succession plan," Martino stated.
In addition to Cashman's murky future in New York, the team will also be facing a more pressing decision this year. Manager Aaron Boone's contract will come to an end after the 2024 season, and the fact that the Yankees have yet to offer him an extension means his job "could certainly be at stake this year," Martino stated. The Yankees hold a club option on Boone's contract for the 2025 season, but another lost year could spell the end of his tenure with the team.
The 2024 campaign clearly will have multiple ramifications for the Yankees, so the team surely will be motivated to bounce back and return to the postseason this year.
