NBA Exec Predicts 'Some High-Level' Players Ask for Trades During 2024 Offseason
This summer could see a lot of player movement and some major shake-ups around the NBA after a relatively quiet trade deadline last week.
"There will be a lot of parts moved this offseason," one Eastern Conference executive predicted while speaking with The Ringer's Howard Beck. "There's going to be some options, some high-level guys that ask to get moved."
So, what are some of the big moves that could potentially be on the horizon?
One executive told Beck that Trae Young is "available" amidst Atlanta's struggles this season, while another said, "I think they would love to trade Trae." Of note, the San Antonio Spurs and Hawks reportedly had discussions involving Young, though a deal didn't come to fruition.
Dejounte Murray was one of the biggest names on the market this season, though he ultimately wasn't dealt, but Beck noted that the general belief is that Young, Murray or both will have new homes this summer.
One executive believes Donovan Mitchell will absolutely bolt in free agency come the summer of 2025, declining his player option, leading to speculation that the Cleveland Cavaliers might consider shopping him this summer.
Another executive believes Kevin Durant could seek yet another trade this summer if the Phoenix Suns disappoint in the playoffs.
"[Durant] for sure looks around," the executive told Beck. "Durant always has a wandering eye."
One executive believes that the Minnesota Timberwolves will look to trade Karl-Anthony Towns this summer, hoping to prevent the payroll from skyrocketing out of control. The Chicago Bulls will surely look to shake things up as well and will put Zach LaVine back on the trade block.
And then there's New Orleans, a team that likely needs to decide which direction it wants to go for the future.
"New Orleans has to make a decision between Zion [Williamson] and [Brandon] Ingram," an an Eastern Conference executive told Beck. "I think that happens this summer."
And that's all before you even consider the potential looming free agency of players like LeBron James (player option), Paul George (player option), Tyrese Maxey (restricted), James Harden, OG Anunoby (player option), Pascal Siakam and Jrue Holiday (player option), among others.
Few leagues do offseason drama better than the NBA. It would appear as though the 2024 summer is shaping up to be an all-timer.
