76ers' Joel Embiid: Lots of Teams Got Better at Trade Deadline; 'Fun for Competition'
Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid may be sidelined for at least a month after undergoing knee surgery Tuesday, but that doesn't mean he isn't following the NBA trade market.
The Sixers were one of more than a dozen teams making moves Thursday ahead of the 3 p.m. ET trade deadline.
The 76ers sent Patrick Beverley to the Bucks for Cameron Payne and a second-round pick; dealt Marcus Morris, Furkan Korkmaz and three second-round picks for Buddy Hield in a deal with the Indiana Pacers; and traded Danuel House and a second-rounder to the Pistons.
Now Philadelphia has a high-volume three-point shooter in Hield. They also cleared cap space to approach the buyout market, where veteran guards like Kyle Lowry and Spencer Dinwiddie are expected to become available.
It's unclear if any of those moves will make up for Embiid's extended absence, but the 76ers weren't the only team having an underwhelming Thursday. Highly-anticipated trade targets like Dejounte Murray, DeMar DeRozan and Andrew Wiggins all stayed with their respective teams.
Some teams still found a way to make a splash before the deadline. The New York Knicks landed Bojan Bogdanovic in a trade with the Detroit Pistons, while the Oklahoma City Thunder added Gordon Hayward thanks to a deal with the Charlotte Hornets.
Embiid and Sixers fans will now have to wait and see how the buyout market develops in order to see the ultimate impact of Philadelphia's deadline moves.
