Lakers Rumors: LA to Be 'Aggressive' on Buyout Market After Quiet NBA Trade Deadline

Erin WalshFeb 8, 2024

While the Los Angeles Lakers stood pat at the trade deadline, it appears they may still look to add some talent in the coming days.

The Purple and Gold intend to be "aggressive on the buyout market," according to Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times, who added that Spencer Dinwiddie, who was sent to the Toronto Raptors from the Brooklyn Nets, could be of interest to the franchise.

Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times reported that the team had options to make "marginal upgrades" but opted not to make those deals:

The Lakers sit ninth in the Western Conference after struggling to a 27-25 record entering Thursday's deadline.

L.A. had been included in numerous trade rumors amid the struggles, but it seemed like a real possibility the franchise would remain quiet at the deadline when TNT's Chris Haynes reported Thursday that "the probable path for for Los Angeles Lakers is standing pat at trade deadline with potential to acquire another star player in the offseason when armed with three first-round picks."

Dinwiddie figures to be among the top buyout candidates after the deadline as The Athletic and Stadium's Shams Charania reported that the Raptors intend to waive him to avoid paying him an upcoming $1.5 million contract bonus for games played.

While his numbers are down this season, the 30-year-old would be a solid addition for the Lakers in the backcourt alongside D'Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves. He averaged 12.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 6.0 assists in 48 games with the Nets while shooting 39.1 percent from the floor and 32.0 percent from deep.

Another potential buyout candidate is Kyle Lowry, who has yet to play a game for the Charlotte Hornets after being included in the trade that sent Terry Rozier to the Miami Heat.

Matt Moore of The Action Network reported Thursday that there's "skepticism" the Hornets will pay out the remainder of Lowry's salary and that if he agrees to a buyout the Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers could be among his suitors.

Lowry is far from the All-Star player he once was, but he could be a solid depth addition for the Lakers. He averaged 8.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 37 games with the Heat this season while shooting 42.6 percent from the floor and 38.5 percent from deep.

It's unclear which other players might interest the Lakers, though Killian Hayes, Danuel House Jr., Marcus Morris and Joe Harris are expected to be available.
