Report: Wembanyama, Edwards, Banchero Team Up for 2024 NBA All-Star Skills Challenge
Three No. 1 overall draft picks are reportedly planning to team up for the NBA All-Star Skills Challenge next weekend.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, 2020 No. 1 overall pick Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves, 2022 No. 1 overall pick Paolo Banchero of the Orlando Magic and 2023 No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama have decided to compete as a trio in the NBA All-Star Skills Challenge.
Additionally, Charania said Wednesday on FanDuel's Run It Back that an all-Indiana Pacers team of Tyrese Haliburton, Myles Turner and Bennedict Mathurin is in the works for the event:
All-Star Weekend is being held in Indianapolis, and the Skills Challenge will take place on Feb. 17 along with the 3-Point and Slam Dunk Contests.
Although he wasn't selected to the All-Star Game as a rookie, Wembanyama has established himself as an instant star in the NBA.
The 7'4" big man is averaging 20.4 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 3.1 blocks, 1.5 three-pointers made and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 30.1 percent from beyond the arc.
San Antonio has struggled to the worst record in the Western Conference at 10-40, but with Wembanyama as the foundation, the Spurs are poised for success in the future.
Both Edwards and Banchero were named to the All-Star Game with Edwards set to make his second appearance and Banchero about to make his All-Star debut.
Edwards is averaging 25.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 2.5 three-pointers made and 1.2 steals per game for a T-Wolves team that has surprised to the tune of a 35-16 record, which is tied for the second-best mark in the Western Conference.
Banchero burst onto the scene as the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2022-23, and he has been even better this season, averaging 23.0 points, 6.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.5 three-pointers made and 1.1 steals per contest.
He also has the Magic playing beyond expectations, as their 27-24 record is tied for seventh in the Eastern Conference.
As for the potential all-Pacers team, Haliburton is leading the way as Indiana's lone representative in the All-Star Game.
The 23-year-old guard is enjoying the best season of his NBA career with averages of 22.5 points and a league-leading 11.7 assists to go along with 3.9 rebounds, 3.2 three-pointers made and 1.1 steals.
Haliburton has the Pacers in sixth place in the East in 29-23, and his play even compelled them to make a big move in the form of acquiring two-time All-Star Pascal Siakam from the Toronto Raptors.
At the past two All-Star Weekends, an all-Cleveland Cavaliers team won the Skills Challenge in Cleveland and an all-Utah Jazz team won the Skills Challenge in Salt Lake City, which suggests Haliburton, Turner and Mathurin will be the favorites in Indianapolis if they compete.
