Andrew Wiggins Trade Rumors: Mavs' Interest in Warriors Star 'Overstated' at Deadline
The Dallas Mavericks' interest in Golden State Warriors star Andrew Wiggins was "overstated," according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
Stein added that the Mavericks and Warriors didn't engage in any "active discussions" on a trade centered around Wiggins.
Yahoo Sports' Jake Fischer reported on Jan. 17 the Mavericks "continue to be linked to various versatile forwards," with Wiggins among them. Without specifying who made the offers, Anthony Slater of The Athletic followed up on Jan. 30 to report Golden State "fielded player-for-player offers for Wiggins."
Even as recently as Monday, Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium said on FanDuel TV's Run It Back that Dallas was still showing interest in the 2021-22 All-Star.
Calling Wiggins a distressed asset would be a stretch, but his trade value has unquestionably declined this year. His three-point shooting (31.1 percent on 3.1 attempts per game) is tapering off, and his scoring average (12.2 points) are on pace to be a career low.
The 28-year-old's shooting woes are one reason why Dallas might be looking in different directions. Per Stein, the Washington Wizards' Kyle Kuzma and Charlotte Hornets' P.J. Washington remain on the team's wish list.
The Mavericks are second in made threes, averaging 15.1 per game, but 11th in three-point percentage (37.2). They could certainly use another forward who stretch the floor, and Wiggins isn't doing that right now.
