Knicks Rumors: Latest on Alec Burks, Quentin Grimes, More Ahead of NBA Trade Deadline
The New York Knicks are reportedly expected to hold onto guard Quentin Grimes past Thursday's trade deadline.
Fred Katz of The Athletic and Ian Begley of SNY.tv indicated in separate reports that Grimes is not part of the Knicks' current trade talks.
New York has been regularly linked to Raptors guard Bruce Brown, but there has been skepticism about the two sides completing a second major deal in a matter of months. Toronto sent OG Anunoby to the Knicks in January as the Raptors embark on a full-scale rebuild.
A more reasonable option may be Detroit Pistons guard Alec Burks, who already has prior experience playing under Tom Thibodeau in New York. Burks spent the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons with the Knicks, emerging as a largely reliable floor spacer off the bench.
The Knicks traded Burks to Detroit in July 2022 in what amounted to a salary dump. The veteran guard has remained a consistent fixture off the bench with the Pistons, averaging 12.3 points and 2.5 rebounds while shooting 39.2 percent from three-point range. With the Pistons languishing with the worst record in the NBA, adding Burks likely wouldn't cost much more than a second-round pick and matching salary.
The Knicks are in the market for an extra guard in large part due to the struggles of Grimes, who emerged as a two-way fixture last season. Grimes has seen every major statistical category take a nosedive this season, and New York was reportedly exploring the trade market for the third-year guard as recently as last month.
However, Grimes started to turn things around in January and finished the month scoring in double figures in three of his last four games. He's currently out of the lineup due to a knee injury, which will almost certainly lock him into remaining with the Knicks moving forward.
