Report: Cavs' Donovan Mitchell Joins Lillard, More in 2024 NBA 3-Point Contest Field
Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell is entering his name in the NBA Three-Point Contest, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported earlier in the day the Milwaukee Bucks' Damian Lillard and Malik Beasley, Indiana Pacers' Tyrese Haliburton, Utah Jazz's Lauri Markkanen and New York Knicks' Jalen Brunson have committed for the event as well.
Mitchell earned his fifth straight All-Star nod this year, and he's averaging 28-plus points for the second successive season.
Three-point shooting hasn't been one of his strengths in 2023-24, though. His three-point percentage (35.1 percent) is on pace to be the second-lowest of his career, and he's averaging 3.2 made threes, his fewest since 2019-20.
The 27-year-old is nonetheless one of those players who can catch fire on a given night. He has connected on six triples in three different games so far, the most recent of which was 128-121 win over the Detroit Pistons on Jan. 31.
Mitchell will be looking to avenge his showing in the 2021 Three-Point Contest. On that night, he was unable to advance out of the first round.
Lillard, the reigning three-point contest champion, will probably head into Indianapolis as the favorite even though his shooting efficiency has dipped a bit as he adjusts to life next to Giannis Antetokounmpo on the Bucks.
Mitchell is one of the outsiders who shouldn't be slept on.
